HEALTHY FRENCH ONION DIP

Healthy French Onion Dip image

Healthy French Onion Dip lightened up with Greek yogurt, caramelized onions and fresh herbs. Classic appetizer is perfect for game day!

Provided by Olena Osipov

Categories     Appetizer

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb 4 small yellow onions, cut into thick slices
1 tbsp oil
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Ground black pepper (to taste)
Caramelized onions
2 cups plain regular or Greek yogurt (2% + fat)
1/4 cup mayo (I use avocado oil)
1 tbsp dill (chives or parsley)
1 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp salt
Ground black pepper (to taste)

Steps:

  • In Instant Pot, add onions and 1/4 tsp salt. No water is necessary.
  • Close the lid, turn pressure release valve to Sealing and pressure cook on High pressure for 15 minutes.
  • Release pressure using Quick Release method.
  • Open the lid and drain juices for later use in soups and stew.
  • Press Saute and add 1 tbsp oil, 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/4 tsp salt.
  • Saute for 4-5 minutes or until onions become fragrant and turn yellow-brown.
  • Preheat large skillet on medium heat and add oil. Wait until oil gets hot.
  • Add onions, baking soda, salt and pepper and saute for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Reduce heat to low and cook onions for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. If you onions starting to burn a bit, add a splash of water to rehydrate them. You can watch my friend Lisa's caramelized onions video for detailed instructions.
  • If you are using regular (not Greek) yogurt, I recommend to strain it in a colander lined with linen towel over a bowl for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, add yogurt, mayo, caramelized onions, dill, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Stir well.
  • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to thicken and let flavors "marry each other".
  • Serve with veggies, crackers or chips.

FRENCH ONION DILL DIP

French Onion Dill Dip image

Four years ago, my husband and I each lost 25 pounds. I joined a fitness website where we had to post our current weight and progress. As our weight came off pretty quickly, other members asked "What diet are you on?" The answer was "none". We ate all of our favorites, in moderation, and tried to "clean up" the family favorites...

Provided by Family Favorites

Categories     Chips

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 can(s) cannelli beans, well drained
1 clove garlic
1/2 c sour cream, regular or light
1 tsp olive oil
1/4 medium onion (...or personal taste)
2 tsp dill weed
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Combine all ingredients, except sour cream, in a small food processor. Process to desired consistency. (I like it smooth.)
  • 2. Place in bowl. Stir in sour cream. Refrigerate 3-4 hours. Serve with baked fries, sweet potato fries, chips, pita chips, crackers, bread cubes, chicken tenders or fresh veggies. Also great on baked potatoes! Kids love this and can't tell the difference between this and the high-fat alternative. High in fiber, as well.
  • 3. *** Using a light sour cream will produce a thinner dip.

HOMEMADE FRENCH ONION DIP

Homemade French Onion Dip image

Chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, sour cream... yummy! I used to make this for post-church food, and everyone loved it. It's way better than the pre-made tubs or making it from a packet mix. In case you didn't know, French onion dip goes very nicely with potato chips (ridged potato chips seem to work best.) Or, if you prefer to maintain the illusion that this dip is healthy, you can eat it with carrot sticks and celery. Enjoy!

CARAMELIZED FRENCH ONION DIP

Caramelized French Onion Dip image

My family loves French onion dip but I find most recipes made from fresh onions tend to be very sweet. By adding the beef bouillon and Worcestershire sauce, it deepens the flavors and slows the caramelization of the onions. The result is a savory dip that goes great with veggies, crackers, and chips. Enjoy!

Provided by CJ

Categories     Dips and Spreads

Time 2h10m

Yield 16

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cups diced yellow onions
1 clove garlic, minced
½ cup water, or more if needed
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon beef base (such as Better than Bouillon®)
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon white sugar
salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 pint sour cream

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large saute pan over medium heat until shimmering, about 2 minutes. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add 1/2 cup water, Worcestershire, beef base, onion powder, and thyme. Increase heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly until beef base is dissolved.
  • Reduce heat to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, 30 to 45 minutes. Liquid will slowly evaporate and onions will caramelize. If onions start to stick to the pan, throw in a splash of water and scrape up the delicious bits. Taste before adding sugar, salt, and pepper. Once seasoned to your liking, remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Mix cooled onions with sour cream until well combined. Chill for 1 hour before serving.
