Time 3h40m

Yield 30

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 ½ cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
½ cup honey
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 tablespoon salt
8 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast over barely warm water. Beat in honey, oil, 2 eggs, and salt. Add the flour one cup at a time, beating after each addition, graduating to kneading with hands as dough thickens. Knead until smooth and elastic and no longer sticky, adding flour as needed. Cover with a damp clean cloth and let rise for 1 1/2 hours or until dough has doubled in bulk.
  • Punch down the risen dough and turn out onto floured board. Divide in half and knead each half for five minutes or so, adding flour as needed to keep from getting sticky. Divide each half into thirds and roll into long snake about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Pinch the ends of the three snakes together firmly and braid from middle. Either leave as braid or form into a round braided loaf by bringing ends together, curving braid into a circle, pinch ends together. Grease two baking trays and place finished braid or round on each. Cover with towel and let rise about one hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Beat the remaining egg and brush a generous amount over each braid. Sprinkle with poppy seeds if desired.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 40 minutes. Bread should have a nice hollow sound when thumped on the bottom. Cool on a rack for at least one hour before slicing.

MOST AMAZING CHALLAH

Most Amazing Challah image

I made up my own Challah that is amazing! I have tried countless combinations to finally get it right. It uses quick rise yeast to save you a bunch of time. Enjoy!

Provided by Palsar7

Categories     Bread     Yeast Bread Recipes     Egg     Challah Recipes

Time 2h40m

Yield 32

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 (.25 ounce) packages quick-rise yeast
4 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 tablespoons salt
¾ cup white sugar
1 cup pareve margarine, melted
4 eggs
12 cups bread flour, or as needed
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup sesame seeds, divided

Steps:

  • Sprinkle the yeast over the water in a large bowl, and stir gently to moisten the yeast. Stir in salt, sugar, margarine, and 4 eggs, and beat well. Gradually mix in the flour, 1 cup at a time, up to 12 cups, until the dough becomes slightly tacky but not wet. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Grease baking sheets, or line them with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Cut the bread dough into 4 equal-sized pieces (or 2 pieces to make 2 large loaves). Cut each piece into thirds for 3-strand braided loaves. Working on a floured surface, roll the small dough pieces into ropes about the thickness of your thumb and about 12 inches long. Ropes should be fatter in the middle and thinner at the ends. Pinch 3 ropes together at the top and braid them. Starting with the strand to the right, move it to the left over the middle strand (that strand becomes the new middle strand.) Take the strand farthest to the left, and move it over the new middle strand. Continue braiding, alternating sides each time, until the loaf is braided, and pinch the ends together and fold them underneath for a neat look. Repeat for the remaining loaves.
  • Place the loaves onto the prepared baking sheets, and let rise until double in size, 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk 1 egg with vanilla extract in a small bowl, and brush the loaves with the egg wash. Sprinkle each loaf with about 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are shiny and golden brown, about 30 minutes. Let cool before slicing.

FANTASTIC VEGAN CHALLAH

Fantastic Vegan Challah image

A delicious vegan challah adapted from an Israeli cookbook by Keren Peled. When I don't need to make this vegan, I just use an egg instead of the egg replacer and also brush with an egg for the glaze with, perhaps a pinch of brown sugar and soy milk or even regular milk for a dairy meal (we have a Dairy ONLY kitchen). You may also sprinkle with poppyseeds, add vanilla and/or cinnamon (I'm trying this for the first time today) or replace the vital wheat gluten with ground flax seeds (which I prefer!) This is our standby challah recipe for shabbat and chaggim and it's truly delicious (and I'm HARD to please)!

CHALLAH BREAD

Challah Bread image

Challah, a traditional Jewish loaf, is a fantastic bread recipe to start with if you are just learning how to braid dough. Anyone can learn how to create this egg-enriched bread made for Sabbath suppers or special holidays.

Provided by By Betty Crocker Kitchens

Categories     Side Dish

Time 2h10m

Yield 1

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 1/2 to 5 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 packages regular active dry yeast
1 cup water
1/3 cup butter or margarine
4 whole eggs
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
Poppy seed

Steps:

  • Grease large bowl and large cookie sheet with shortening; set aside. In another large bowl, stir 2 cups of the flour, the sugar, salt and yeast until well mixed. In 1-quart saucepan, heat 1 cup water and butter over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until butter is melted and mixture is very warm (120°F to 130°F).
  • Add warm liquid and 4 whole eggs to flour mixture. Beat with electric mixer on low speed until moistened; beat on medium speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl frequently. With spoon, stir in enough remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, to make dough easy to handle.
  • Place dough on lightly floured surface. Knead in 1/2 to 1 cup flour until dough is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place dough in greased bowl; turning dough to grease all sides. Cover bowl loosely with plastic wrap and cloth towel. Let rise in warm place about 35 to 45 minutes or until dough has doubled in size.
  • Punch down dough several times to remove all air bubbles. Divide dough in half; roll into two 14x6-inch rectangles. Cut each rectangle lengthwise into three 14x2-inch strips. Braid strips together; tuck ends under to seal. Place crosswise on greased cookie sheet. Cover; let rise in warm place until doubled in size, about 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Heat oven to 400°F. Bake 10 minutes. In small bowl, mix 1 egg white and 1 tablespoon water until well mixed. Brush over top of loaves; sprinkle with poppy seed. Bake 5 to 10 minutes longer or until loaves sound hollow when lightly tapped. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to cooling racks. Cool completely.

FANTASTIC CHALLAH

Fantastic Challah image

This recipe came from a lot of trial and error. It was the first major thing I learned to cook on my own, so I'm pretty proud of it. I use it for a traditional Shabbos meal, but its good anytime. Most of the prep time is from the dough needing to rise. It's actually very easy to make.

Categories     Yeast Breads

Time 3h30m

Yield 2 loaves

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 1/2 packages yeast
1 3/4 cups warm water, dividied
3/4 cup sugar, plus
1 tablespoon sugar
6 cups bread flour
3 extra large eggs, plus
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup corn oil or 1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon salt

Steps:

  • This recipe works best in a big mixer, but can be done by hand.
  • I've never tried it in a bread machine.
  • In a separate bowl, proof yeast by mixing with with 3/4 cup of warm water (follow temperature guide on package) and 1T sugar.
  • It should double in size.
  • While yeast is proofing, put dry ingredients into mixing bowl.
  • Wait for the yeast to be ready to add eggs, oil, 1 C warm water, and the yeast mixture.
  • Mix on lowest setting for about a minute then increase slightly to reccommended setting for bread.
  • Mix for 10- 15 minutes adding flour if needed.
  • Dough should be sticky, but pull away from sides of bowl.
  • Leave dough in the same bowl to rise, and cover with a damp cloth.
  • Keep it someplace warm, I like to run the dishwasher at the same time and put the bowl on top.
  • Let it rise for 1 1/2- 2 hours, until double in size.
  • When dough is doubled, turn it out onto a floured surface and knead by hand a little.
  • Oil 2 large loaf pans well, this bread tends to stick.
  • divide the dough in half.
  • You can braid it like traditional challah, or just form into a loaf shape and put it into the pan.
  • To braid it divide each half into three pieces and roll each into a rope.
  • Pinch the ends of three ropes together and alternate crossing the sides over the middle.
  • Pinch the ends together and place in loaf pan.
  • Brush the top with a beaten egg.
  • You can also top with sesame or poppy seeds.
  • Bake for 1/2- 3/4 hour at 350 degrees.
  • Bread should be medium brown and should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Let cool on a cake rack.
  • This challah freezes very well if wrapped tightly.
  • It tastes great warm.

  • In a small bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and 4 teaspoons sugar; let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  • Place currants in medium bowl; add enough boiling water to cover, and set aside. Form remaining piece of dough into a 12-by-18-inch rectangle. Brush with egg. In a small bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar; sprinkle over dough. Drain currants and sprinkle over cinnamon-sugar mixture; cover with wax paper. Using a rolling pin, gently press cinnamon-sugar mixture and currants into dough. Remove wax paper and roll dough lengthwise, like a jelly roll. Shape roll into a round and transfer to remaining prepared pan. Using clean kitchen scissors, snip six 3/4-inch deep incisions around top of roll.
