Sauteed Cabbage image

For a simple side dish, try Ina Garten's Sauteed Cabbage recipe from Barefoot Contessa on Food Network Ñ all you need is shredded cabbage and a little butter.

1 small head white cabbage, including outer green leaves (2 1/2 pounds)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Cut the cabbage in half and, with the cut-side down, slice it as thinly as possible around the core, as though you were making coleslaw. Discard the core.
  • Melt the butter in a large saute pan or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add the cabbage, salt, and pepper and saute for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and begins to brown. Season, to taste, and serve warm.

I made this for a BBQ dinner with my Estonian SIL and we all loved it. Super easy and quite yummy. Goes great with anything. You can do this in the oven at about 300* until a wooden skewer tests the cabbage done.

1 head cabbage, about 5 or 6 pounds, washed, trimmed, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
salt and pepper, to taste being careful not to oversalt

Steps:

  • Put the chopped cabbage into a foil grill bag (or make your own with heavy duty aluminum foil doubled over.
  • Add butter, cream, salt and pepper.
  • Seal up the ends of foil or the foil bag.
  • Place on the slowest side of the grill and let it cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until it tests done.

Taiwanese cabbage is sweeter and more tender than normal white cabbage and cooks very quickly. It's the perfect side dish for so many entrees, and not just Asian.

1 tablespoon avocado oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (1 inch) piece fresh ginger root, peeled and thinly sliced
5 cups Taiwanese cabbage, leaves separated and cut into 1 1/2-inch squares
1 small red chile pepper, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
¼ teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a wok or a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and ginger and cook for about 30 seconds. Add cabbage and chile pepper. Stir quickly, mixing in garlic and ginger. Stir-fry until cabbage becomes translucent and volume is reduced by half, but without it losing texture, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in rice vinegar and salt.

Cabbage bread variation from the "streudel" easily made with canned biscuits. Comes from Pillsbury Classic 30th cookoff book.

1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
4 cups chopped cabbage
2 cups sliced onions (sliced and cut in half)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8-1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 (10 ounce) cans hungry jack flaky refrigerated biscuits

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375.
  • Melt margarine in large skillet, then stir in cabbage, onion, salt and pepper.
  • Cover and let cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes until tender crisp.
  • Stir occasionally.
  • Separate dough into 20 biscuits and press over bottom and 1/2 inch up sides of a 13x 9 pan or a 12 inch pizza pan.
  • Spoon hot cabbage mixture over crust.
  • Bake at 375 for 18-25 minutes or until deep golden brown.
  • Cut into triangles or squares and serve hot with melted butter.
