CREAMY AU GRATIN POTATOES

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes image

This is my husband's favorite dish, and he considers it a special occasion every time I make it. The creamy cheese sauce and the tender potatoes in this classic French dish combine to make a deliciously addictive experience. It's a great side dish with a roast pork loin or beef tenderloin. Add a green salad and French bread, and you have found the magic path to a man's heart. To avoid lumps in your sauce, add the milk just a little at a time as you stir the flour and butter. Experiment with different cheeses for variety.

EASY AU GRATIN POTATOES RECIPE

Easy Au Gratin Potatoes Recipe image

Layers of thinly-sliced potatoes, a creamy sauce and two different types of cheese make this the best Easy Au Gratin Potatoes recipe you'll ever taste!

Provided by Blair Lonergan

Categories     Side Dish

Time 1h35m

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 tablespoons salted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
1 cup whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 ½ teaspoons minced fresh thyme leaves or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
⅛ teaspoon freshly-grated nutmeg
½ cup grated cheddar cheese
½ cup grated Gruyere cheese
2 ½ lbs. russet potatoes (about 5 medium), peeled and sliced ⅛-inch thick

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400° F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish; set aside.
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and garlic; cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream; cook, whisking, until thickened, another 2 minutes or so. Add the thyme, salt, pepper, nutmeg, half of the cheddar and half of the Gruyere. Whisk for about 1 more minute, making sure that all of the cheese is melted. Taste and season with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.
  • Arrange half of the potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Season with a little bit of salt. Pour half of the sauce over top. Arrange the remaining potatoes on top, season with another pinch of salt, and pour the remaining sauce over all. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Cover and bake for 50-60 minutes (or until the potatoes are just about tender), then uncover and bake until browned on top, an additional 15-20 minutes. Let cool slightly, then serve.

SKILLET SCALLOPED POTATOES (AU GRATIN)

Skillet Scalloped Potatoes (Au Gratin) image

EatSimpleFood.com This beautiful and delicious scratch made cast iron skillet potato (au gratin) recipe is all about heavy whipping cream, Parmesan cheese, and a crispy top.

Provided by beckie

Categories     Side Dish

Time 1h25m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 tsp unsalted butter
2 lb yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled & sliced thin
2 cups heavy whipping cream
12 sprigs thyme, divided
2 bay leaves
1/2 tsp salt
pinch black pepper
pinch ground nutmeg
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400F.
  • Butter a baking dish (this helps to brown the edges and prevent sticking). If using a 10 inch cast iron skillet wait on this step until the heated cream comes out of the pan.
  • Bring a pan to medium high heat and add the cream, 6 sprigs or so of thyme, bay leaves, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Gently bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove cream from heat, and discard bay leaves and thyme. Add cream to bowl of sliced potatoes and stir to coat (careful may be hot!).
  • Add ~ 1/2 cup cream to the bottom of the baking dish or cast iron skillet and layer potatoes, spreading evenly. Add remaining cream to nearly cover the potatoes (you will probably have some cream left - just toss it if you do).
  • Top with shredded parmesan and garnish with remaining thyme sprigs.
  • Cover dish with aluminum foil lightly covered with oil - tenting so that the aluminum doesn't touch the cheese. Leave one corner open to let some steam escape, but not open enough to brown the cheese.
  • Bake covered ~ 50 minutes or until potatoes are tender with a fork.
  • Remove aluminum foil and bake / roast 10 minutes or until cheese starts to brown. If the cheese is being stubborn, turn the broiler on to low and broil 3-5 minutes or until cheese is brown. Happy Eating! Beckie

SCALLOPED POTATOES AU GRATIN

Scalloped Potatoes au Gratin image

My mom made scalloped potatoes this way, and I love the recipe because it always tastes great. You don't have to add seasonings and you will always have a consistent product. Turn it into a main dish by adding ham slices to bottom of pan or ham pieces layered in.

Provided by Barbara Burns

Categories     Side Dish     Potato Side Dish Recipes     Potatoes Au Gratin Recipes

Time 2h35m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 (10.75 ounce) cans cream of mushroom soup, divided
1 cup cooked ham slices, or to taste, divided
6 large russet potatoes, or more to taste, thinly sliced and divided
1 onion, thinly sliced and divided
1 ½ cups shredded Italian cheese blend, or more to taste, divided
⅓ cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Spread about 2/3 of one can of mushroom soup into the bottom of a 9-inch square baking dish. Layer about half the ham slices, 1/3 of the potato slices, half the onion slices, and 1/3 of the Italian cheese blend, respectfully, atop the mushroom soup.
  • Layer about half the remaining potatoes atop the first layers. Mix soup remaining in first can with milk; pour over the potatoes.
  • Finish layering with remaining ham slices, remaining onion slices, about half the remaining cheese, and the remaining potato slices. Spread second can of mushroom soup over the top layer. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the soup. Cover dish with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove foil and continue baking another 45 minutes. Turn heat off, replace aluminum foil on the dish, and let the potatoes bake in the cooling oven until the sauce is absorbed, about 30 minutes more.
