CUBE STEAK WITH GRAVY

Cube Steak with Gravy image

This is my husband's favorite cube steak, passed down from his grandma. Yummy steak with great gravy as long as you're patient while making the gravy. Best served with rice.

Categories     Meat and Poultry Recipes     Beef     Steaks

Time 25m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 8

¼ cup flour
¼ cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
6 cube steaks
2 tablespoons butter, or as needed
1 cup milk, or to taste
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Whisk flour, cornstarch, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt together in a shallow bowl. Spread 1 tablespoon of the flour mixture onto a plate; press each cube steak into flour mixture to coat completely.
  • Place coated steaks on a work surface and pound each several times with a meat tenderizer on each side to pound flour into steak. Pound each steak a second time to further incorporate flour mixture into the meat.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until skillet is about 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Cook steaks in hot butter until browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Transfer steaks and any stray pieces of meat to a plate and tent with aluminum foil to keep warm. Let skillet cool briefly.
  • Heat the same skillet over low heat. Pour enough milk into the skillet to cover the bottom of the pan. Whisk 1 tablespoon flour mixture into hot milk until gravy has a cream-like consistency, 10 to 15 minutes. Add more flour mixture as necessary to thicken gravy. Transfer any steak scraps back into the skillet and season gravy with salt and black pepper.
  • Place hot steaks on plates and top with gravy.

CUBE STEAK WITH ONION GRAVY

Cube Steak with Onion Gravy image

Cube Steak with Onion Gravy is a classic easy dinner recipe. Thin beef steaks, tenderized and braised in a flavorful gravy make this a delicious meal.

Provided by Sandy Clifton

Categories     Dinner

Time 2h30m

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 Cube Steaks
1 tsp Kosher Salt (3/4 tsp table salt)
1/2 tsp Pepper
1/4 cup All Purpose Flour
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Onion Powder
3 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
1 Onion (thickly sliced)
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
2 cups Beef Broth (low sodium)

Steps:

  • Sprinkle both sides of the cube steaks with the salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • On a plate, mix together the flour, garlic powder and onion powder.
  • Heat a 12" skillet over medium high heat. When hot, add the butter and onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened. Remove to a bowl.
  • While the onion is cooking, dredge the cube steaks in the flour (both sides) and shake off the excess. Set aside.
  • After cooking the onion, add the olive oil to the skillet. When hot, add the cube steaks. Cook about 4 minutes on each side.
  • Add the beef broth, there should be just enough to cover the cube steaks. Then bring to a simmer, gently scraping up any browned bits under the cube steaks. Reduce heat to low and cover the skillet most of the way, leaving just a small gap for steam to escape.
  • Cook for 1 hour, then add the onions to the skillet. Cook 1 more hour, or until the cube steaks are tender.

EASY CUBED STEAK AND GRAVY

Easy Cubed Steak and Gravy image

So easy an 8th grader could do it, but tastes tender, delicious, 8 ingredients, 8 instructions. Definitely good when you need an easy meal. Great when you're tired, and want a good meal.

Provided by Teresa M

Categories     Meat

Time 7h

Yield 2-4 , 2-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb cubed steak (around 4 large pieces, either pork cubed steak or beef, both are really good, pork is cheaper and yo)
1/2 cup canola oil (or enough to cover bottom of a large skillet)
1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 medium onion, sliced
1 (18 ounce) jar beef gravy (I like Heinz Homestyle Savory Beef or Pork Gravy, Kroger brand gravy is good too. If you're using th)
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt (salt to taste is not allowed on Recipezaar, as I have to enter a specific amount, so 1/4 teaspoon is)

Steps:

  • Preheat crockpot on high (I use a Rival 4 quart crockpot for this, it's gotta be 20 years old, but still does the job; all crockpots are different, the Rival is a much slower cooking one than my slightly smaller and newer Proctor-Silex model), and pour gravy into crockpot. If you have a newer model you defintely can do from it start to finish on the low temperature.
  • Add milk to the gravy jar or cream of mushroom soup, and shake to get all of the gravy or soup rinsed out, and put in the crockpot.
  • Add sliced onion on top of the gravy. Put crockpot lid on.
  • Heat oil in a large frying pan until medium hot.
  • In a plastic bag zipper bag mix flour and black pepper, put cubed steak in flour mixture and coat well, and brown on both sides.
  • Put browned cube steak in crock pot, and cover with lid.
  • Turn crockpot to low temperature, and cook 5 hours, or until done. Or it's so easy to just brown the cubed steaks the night before, put everything in the crockpot, stick in the frig., get up, and turn crockpot to low, and it can cook all day on low, without a problem, as it's mostly done already after you browned it.
  • Okay, this is so easy I struggled to find the last/8th step, as I really didn't have one. I'd suggest a nice long bath or shower -- the meal is mostly done.
  • Note: This is good with mashed potatoes or a baked potato and your favorite vegetable, just an easy meal. I don't think it would take an hour to prepare, but there's time there in the time stated to do it if you need it.

Slowly pour in 1+1/2 Cups of milk, stirring constantly. Continue stirring, with a wire whisk to help with lumps, over the lowest heat setting until thickened and there are no lumps. This will happen rather quickly. Add a little more milk if you prefer thinner gravy. Return steak to the pan and turn to coat with gravy on both sides.
