These ingredient amounts aren't set in stone, make yours with more pasta and less sauce or we like our sauce so much that we use more sauce than pasta with lots of cheese. This is easy and you can make it with whatever you have around.

EASY BAKED MOSTACCIOLI

Easy Baked Mostaccioli image

Also known as Baked Ziti, Baked Penne, or Baked Cheesy Pasta as we like to refer to it, Easy Baked Mostaccioli is a hearty simple baked pasta dish made of tube-shaped noodles surrounded in meaty tomato sauce and melty cheese. But no matter what you call it, it's a tasty family-friendly and budget-friendly dish that should become a weeknight dinner staple for sure.

Categories     Main Dishes

Time 1h5m

Yield about 8-10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 (16 oz.) box rigatoni pasta
1 lb. ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (24 oz.) jar spaghetti sauce
1 (14.5 oz.) can diced or petite diced tomatoes
1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. (about 8 oz.) shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 c. (about 2 oz.) shredded Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Cook rigatoni pasta in salted water according to package directions; drain.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown ground beef until cooked through. Drain.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Add onion and garlic to skillet with ground beef. Cook until onion is just tender, about 3 minutes.
  • Add spaghetti sauce, diced tomatoes with their juice, Italian seasoning, and salt; stir to combine. Heat through until mixture just begins to bubble.
  • Remove from heat. Add cooked rigatoni pasta and stir to combine until pasta is coated with sauce.
  • Layer half the pasta mixture in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish coated with non-stick cooking spray. Top with half the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Spoon remaining pasta mixture on top of the cheese to create a second layer. Top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake at 350℉ for 25-30 minutes until cheese is melty. Let stand about 5-10 minutes before serving.
  • You can substitute penne or ziti pasta for the rigatoni, if you'd like. Pretty much any other kind of pasta will work, too.
  • Substitute Italian sausage for the ground beef if you'd like. Or, use a combination of the two -- it's great either way.
  • For the best melty cheesy result, shred your own cheeses.

EASY BAKED PENNE

Easy Baked Penne image

I'm a college student living in dorms with very little in the way of money, good cooking equipment, or access to ingredients. Almost everything in this recipe can be substituted for something else. This (and everything else I'll be posting) is really for my own reference and if it helps out other hungry college kids, great. This can be a little salty, but I've found that the other college students I cook for enjoy that. It's a good alternative to ramen and dining hall food, since our dorms have ovens and stove tops. I usually add some fresh hot peppers to this, since I like my food spicy. This recipe isn't likely to be your favorite if you live at home, but for someone on the go or in my situation, it's great because it makes fantastic leftovers.

Provided by handsandfeet

Categories     Penne

Time 50m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb penne pasta
1 1/2 lbs ground hot Italian sausage
1 small onion, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
2 (24 ounce) jars tomato sauce (any variety)
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon italian seasoning
1 (8 ounce) package shredded mozzarella cheese
8 ounces Italian cheese blend

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • Cook pasta to slightly al dente, as it will continue to cook in the oven.
  • While water is boiling and pasta is cooking, cook sausage in a skillet until slightly browned and drain off some of the liquid if desired.
  • Add onion and pepper to the pan to soften.
  • After draining pasta, put it back in the pot and add one jar of tomato sauce each to both the pasta pot and the skillet.
  • To a 13x9 baking dish (college students, if you don't have a baking dish at school, you can buy the disposable foil ones at many campus convenience stores) add a layer of the meat mixture, then a layer of pasta, then a layer of the cheeses mixed together.
  • Repeat this until you've used up your ingredients, making the top layer a cheese layer. Make sure the top is totally covered with cheese (if you don't use all the grated cheese, that's fine. I just like a lot of cheese.).
  • Bake for 20-30 minutes.

Baked Mostaccioli image

Do it like Donatelli's, and don't skimp on the cheese.

Provided by Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Yield Makes 3 quarts sauce and 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 22

1/4 cup vegetable oil, divided
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 tablespoon minced garlic
Kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 small onion, diced
2 (12-ounce) cans tomato paste
1 (29-ounce) can tomato puree
1 (15-ounce) can crushed tomatoes, with juice
1 tablespoon beef base, such as Better Than Bouillon
1 tablespoon chicken base, such as Better Than Bouillon
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons steak seasoning, such as McCormick's Montreal Steak Seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
Vegetable oil, for the baking dish
1 pound dried mostaccioli, cooked al dente
3 1/2 to 4 cups meat sauce, warm or at room temperature
2 1/2 cups shredded whole-milk mozzarella cheese
2 1/2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
Shredded or grated Parmesan cheese, for garnish

Steps:

  • 1. To make the sauce: Heat 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef, garlic, salt to taste, and the pepper and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until the beef is browned. Set aside.
  • 2. Heat the rest of the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring a bit, until soft. Stir in all of the tomato products. Fill the tomato puree can with hot water, and stir in the beef and chicken base to dissolve. Add the mixture to the saucepan along with the Parmesan, steak seasoning, garlic salt, basil, and parsley, and bring to a simmer.
  • 3. Add the beef to the sauce, reduce the heat to low, and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Taste and add salt, if necessary.
  • 4. To make the baked pasta: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly oil a 10-inch deep-dish pie plate.
  • 5. Toss the cooked pasta with 2 cups of the meat sauce and 11/2 cups each of the mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses. Mound the mixture in the pie dish and top with the rest of the meat sauce and the mozzarella and Cheddar. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet, and bake until bubbling and golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Top with the Parmesan cheese and serve hot.
