- Dish Soap and Hot Water. Boil about two liters of water and mix in a few tablespoons of liquid dish soap. Take this mixture and slowly pour down the sink.
- Wire Coat Hanger. Straighten the hanger out but leave the hook. Make sure you have a grocery bag or something to discard your findings. Use the hook end of the hanger to fish in the drain and pull up any food or hair buildup that is clogging the passageway in the pipe.
- Baking Soda & Vinegar. Clear the area around your sink and put a 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain. Follow that with a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Now plug your drain and let it sit for an hour.
- Salt, Borax, and Vinegar. Start with 1/4 cup of salt, 1/4 cup of Borax, and then a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Add a pot of boiling water and let it sit for at least an hour or until it clears.
- Baking Soda & Salt. Mix salt and baking soda together. About a 1/2 cup of each and pour down the drain. Let it sit for a minimum of a half hour or as long as overnight.
- Plunger. This tactic is mainly for the kitchen sink. Food gets stuck at the curve of the drain under the sink where it's hard to reach with a hook, so try a plunger to clear it.

- Freshen drains with baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar are like PB&J or matcha and oat milk for do-it-yourself cleaning: They go together perfectly.
- Cream of tartar drain fix. Bob Vila (the OG of home repair) suggests another combination to dissolve stubborn bathroom clogs of hair and soap scum. Combine two cups of baking soda with 1/8th cup of cream of tartar (approximately two tablespoons) and a half cup of salt.
- The simple detergent and hot water cure for grease clogs. For those who love using coconut oil in your beauty routine, you might notice your drain has been slow.
- Borax, salt, and vinegar. Here is a solution recommended by Networx. Start with 1/4 cup of salt and a 1/4 cup of Borax with a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Pour the solution into the drain followed by a pot of boiling water.

- Clear Any Standing Water. If your sink (or tub or shower) is full of backed-up water, bail out as much of the water as you can by using a cup and dumping the water into a bucket.
- Pour in Boiling Water. If you're working on a sink or tub drain, first remove the sink pop-up stopper or the tub stopper to gain better access to the drain.
- Cover the Drain. Cover the drain with a stopper, if available, and let the mixture work for 10 minutes. The baking soda and vinegar will fizz and bubble a lot; covering the drain forces the reaction downward instead of up and out of the drain, but it's not critical that you cover the drain.
- Add More Boiling Water. Pour another pot of boiling water into the drain. This will help wash away any clogs that the baking soda and vinegar loosened up.
- Clear the Drain. Flush the drain with hot water from the tap to help remove any remaining debris from the drain pipe.
- Repeat as Needed. It can take a few tries with this low-cost, eco-friendly drain cleaner to completely clear your drain, particularly if your drain is especially slow or clogged.
