CRISPY FRIED SHRIMP RECIPE

Crispy Fried Shrimp Recipe image

The best fried shrimp recipe is dipped in buttermilk, dredged in a light and crispy seasoned flour coating, and fried to golden brown perfection!

Provided by Blair Lonergan

Categories     Appetizer     Dinner

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups self-rising flour
Salt
1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 cups buttermilk
4 cups peanut oil or vegetable oil, for frying
2 pounds medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
Optional, for serving: tartar sauce (or other dipping sauce); lemon wedges; fresh parsley

Steps:

  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together flour, 1 tablespoon salt, Old Bay seasoning, and black pepper.
  • Place the buttermilk in a separate shallow bowl.
  • Pour the oil into a medium Dutch oven or cast iron skillet and warm over medium-high heat until it reaches 375 degrees F.
  • Meanwhile, pat the shrimp dry and dredge them in the flour mixture first, then coat with buttermilk, and dredge in the flour mixture again. Shake the shrimp after each coating to get off any excess flour or batter.
  • Working in batches, fry shrimp until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes). Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shrimp to a paper towel-lined tray. Season with additional salt, to taste. You may need to increase the heat to keep the oil at a steady temperature between 350 degrees F and 375 degrees F as the shrimp fry.
  • Keep the fried shrimp warm in a 200 degree F oven while you fry the remaining batches.

FRIED SHRIMP

Fried Shrimp image

Lightly breaded and fried, this Crispy Fried Shrimp is totally addictive, and perfect for dinner or as an appetizer dipped in cocktail sauce.

Provided by Kristin Maxwell

Categories     Appetizer     Dinner

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 pound large or jumbo shrimp peeled and deveined (tails on or off (your choice))
2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup Panko crumbs
1/2 cup flour
Vegetable oil
Salt
Fresh minced parsley for garnish if desired

Steps:

  • Place shrimp in a large bowl and sprinkle shrimp with Old Bay seasoning and stir to coat.
  • Set up breading station using three shallow dishes (like a pie pan): In the first dish pour in ¾ cup of flour. In the second dish, whisk together eggs with 1 tablespoon of water. In the third dish, combine Panko breadcrumbs with ½ cup of flour. Coat shrimp in flour (shake off excess), then egg (let excess drip off), then Panko/flour mixture, pressing breadcrumbs lightly into shrimp to coat. Arrange shrimp in a single layer on a plate until all are coated and ready to fry.
  • Pour about an inch of vegetable oil in a heavy bottom dutch oven or skillet with high sides and over medium heat; about 5-10 minutes. You can test with a meat thermometer that should register between 350-400 degrees, or drop in a few breadcrumbs to see if it sizzles.
  • Line a large plate with several layers of paper towels.
  • Fry shrimp in a single layer (you may need to fry several batches), 1-2 minutes per batch or until breading is golden in color. The amount of time will depend on how hot the oil is - don't overcook or the shrimp will become chewy. Use a metal strainer to remove shrimp from the oil and transfer to a paper towel lined plate.
  • Sprinkle salt lightly over the shrimp and serve with cocktail sauce and lemon wedges.

Fried shrimp, dredged in flour, eggs, and then coated in bread crumbs to give you the best-fried shrimp recipe. These deep-fried shrimp are crispy and crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Provided by jehan yusoof

Categories     Shrimp / Prawn Recipes

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

500g of cleaned, deveined, shelled shrimp with tail on
1 and 1/2 cup of flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon red chilli powder(substitute with old bay seasoning, sweet paprika)
2 eggs beaten until frothy
2 cups of bread crumbs(I have used regular bread crumbs, you can use panko bread crumbs as substitute)
2 cups of vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Add flour(1 and 1/2 cup) to a deep flat container, season with salt(1 tsp), red chilli powder(1 tsp or substitute with old bay seasoning, sweet paprika).
  • Shake and combine the flour with the seasoning.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, beat eggs(2) and set close to the seasoned flour container.
  • Add breadcrumbs(2cups) into a medium-sized bowl, and set close to the beaten egg bowl.
  • Have an extra plate set to hold the floured and breaded shrimp.
  • Since you will be coating the shrimp and this can be a little messy, you can always wear disposable gloves.
  • Make sure the shrimp are dry, add them to the seasoned flour, and coat them well on both sides.
  • Shake off any excess flour and then dip the shrimp in egg.
  • Press each side so the shrimp is coated well with the breadcrumbs.
  • Transfer to the plate.
  • Coat each of the shrimp with flour, egg, and breadcrumbs and place them on the plate.
  • Prepare a deep tray with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • Add oil to a deep frying pan, bring the oil to a steady temperature. Drop a few bread crumbs into the oil and wait for them to sizzle. The breadcrumbs sizzling is a sign that the oil has reached the proper temperature.
  • Begin with adding one breaded shrimp and fry it until it turns golden brown which will take about 1 minute and 30 seconds for both sides.
  • Once you have a feel of the correct temperature and how long to fry the shrimp.
  • Deep fry all the shrimp in batches of 3 or 4.
  • Transfer onto kitchen towels to remove any excess oil.
  • Serve with your favorite hot sauce and lime wedges.
