My DH and I had these for the first time while in Puerta Rico. Be sure to make fresh and not use a bottled mix. Addictive!

CUBAN MOJITO

Cuban Mojito image

Rum-based alcoholic drink. Original recipe from La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba as stated on TasteofCuba.com (http://www.tasteofcuba.com/mojito.html). Very tasty and refreshing...maybe a little more rum, but that's just me! I used about a tablespoon of simple syrup instead of powdered sugar.

Time 5m

Yield 1 beverage, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 teaspoon powdered sugar
1 lime, juice of (2 ounces)
4 mint leaves
1 sprig mint
havana club white rum (2 ounces)
2 ounces club soda

Steps:

  • Place the mint leaves into a long mojito glass (often called a "collins" glass) and squeeze the juice from a cut lime over it. You'll want about two ounces of lime juice, so it may not require all of the juice from a single lime.
  • Add the powdered sugar, then gently smash the mint into the lime juice and sugar with a muddler (a long wooden device *pictured on the website*, though you can also use the back of a fork or spoon if one isn't available).
  • Add ice (preferably crushed) then add the rum and stir, and top off with the club soda (you can also stir the club soda in as per your taste). Garnish with a mint sprig.

CUBAN MOJITO

Cuban Mojito image

This is a traditional mojito recipe, very similar to the drinks I enjoyed in Varadero, Cuba. The muddling and the order of the ingredients helps ensure that all the flavors are well blended. Serve with a straw and a decorative stir stick to keep the different flavors well mixed together. Mint sprigs may be used for a garnish instead of lime wedges. Enjoy!

2020-03-14 The original recipe introduces the lime juice into the Cuban Mojito as the lime wedges are muddled with the mint and sugar. If you don’t have a muddler that’s alright, simply squeeze the juice (1 fl oz per serving) into a cocktail shaker with the mint leaves and ice (the ice impacting against the mint while shaking will have a similar effect as muddling). After shaking, strain the mixture ...
