MICHELADA

1/4 cup kosher salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
Juice of 1 lime plus 1 lime wedge
2 cups ice
3 ounces tomato juice (1/3 cup)
4 dashes Louisiana-style hot sauce, such as Tabasco
4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
One 12-ounce chilled Mexican-style beer, such as Dos Equis Amber

Steps:

  • Combine the salt and chili powder on a small plate. Rub the lime wedge along the rim of a large lager beer glass, and then dip the rim into the chili salt. Fill the glass with the ice. Pour in the lime juice, tomato juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire and beer. Stir briefly to incorporate. Garnish with the lime wedge.

BOOZY MICHELADA

4 cups tomato juice
2 cups clam-tomato juice, such as Clamato
2 cups gold tequila
1/4 cup lime juice
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
3 or 4 dashes hot sauce
3 or 4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup kosher salt
1 teaspoon chili powder
10 cans Mexican lager beer
Ice, for serving

Steps:

  • In a large pitcher, combine the tomato juice, clam-tomato juice, tequila, lime juice, horseradish, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
  • In a small shallow dish, whisk to combine the salt and chili powder.
  • Dip glass rims in the salt mixture to coat. Fill glasses with ice, then fill halfway with tomato-tequila mixture. Top off with beer and serve.

Coarse salt
Lime wedges
Ice cubes
6 dashes hot sauce, such as Valentina or Tabasco
3 dashes Maggi seasoning or soy sauce
1 to 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1/4 to 1/3 cup lime juice
1 bottle (12 ounces) beer, such as Corona, Modelo or Tecate

Steps:

  • Place coarse salt in a shallow dish; run a lime wedge around rims of 2 cocktail glasses. Dip rims of glasses into salt, shaking off excess. Fill each glass with ice. In a small pitcher, combine hot sauce, Maggi seasoning, Worcestershire sauce and lime juice. Add beer. Pour into glasses over ice. Garnish with lime wedges. Serve immediately.

FROZEN MICHELADA

1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon sugar
Juice of 2 limes plus 3 lime wedges
One 6-ounce can tomato juice
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
1/4 teaspoon celery salt, plus more for serving
Two 12-ounce bottles pilsner beer, such as Modelo

Steps:

  • Mix the chili powder, salt and sugar in a small bowl, and then transfer to a plate. Rim 2 tall pint glasses with 1 lime wedge. Press the rim of each glass, one at a time, into the spice mixture to coat the edge. Chill glasses until ready to serve.
  • Put the lime juice, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, celery salt and 1 cup ice in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour the mixture into the 2 chilled glasses and top off each with a bottle of beer. Garnish with the lime wedges and a sprinkle of celery salt.

1/2 lime, juiced
2 tablespoons tomato juice
Hot sauce
1 bottle pale ale beer, chilled

  • Mix the salt and chili powder together in a small dish. Rub the rim of the glass with some lime juice and then dip the rim in the salt mixture. Add the lime juice, tomato juice and a splash of hot sauce to a cocktail shaker. Add some ice cubes and the cold beer. Shake well and serve.
