  • Place all ingredients in the bottom of a slow cooker or crock pot and stir to combine. Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6-8 hours.
  • Transfer the apple mixture to a blender and puree until smooth.
  • Transfer the apple butter to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

12 apples - peeled, cored, and cut into small cubes
2 cups brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Steps:

  • Combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and cloves in a slow cooker.
  • Cook on High until the apples are tender enough to easily mash with a fork, 4 to 6 hours.
  • Puree apple mixture with an immersion blender until smooth.
  • Sterilize the jars and lids in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. Pack apple butter into the hot, sterilized jars, filling the jars to within 1/4 inch of the top. Run a knife or a thin spatula around the insides of the jars after they have been filled to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars with a moist paper towel to remove any food residue. Top with lids, and screw on rings.
  • Place a rack in the bottom of a large stockpot and fill halfway with water. Bring to a boil and lower jars into the boiling water using a holder. Leave a 2-inch space between the jars. Pour in more boiling water if necessary to bring the water level to at least 1 inch above the tops of the jars. Bring the water to a rolling boil, cover the pot, and process for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the jars from the stockpot and place onto a cloth-covered or wood surface, several inches apart, until cool. Once cool, press the top of each lid with a finger, ensuring that the seal is tight (lid does not move up or down at all). Store in a cool, dark area.

1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
15.25 ounce box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup unsalted butter (cut into 16 pieces)

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, stir together apple slices, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt until well-combined.
  • Lightly butter the bottom and sides of your slow cooker basin.
  • Layer apple mixture evenly over the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Sprinkle yellow cake mix evenly over apple layer.

This apple butter is everything you could want from a homemade preserve and so much more.

6 lbs apples (peeled and roughly chopped, I've used Gala, Fuji and Honeycrisp apples in the past)
3 cups white sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • Place the apples in the crockpot and top with the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cover with lid and set to HIGH. After a few hours, uncover, stir and continue cooking with the lid off.
  • Continue simmering until the mixture is thickened and dark brown. Stir occasionally, as needed to prevent sticking.
  • When the liquid is absorbed, after 8-10 hours, blend until smooth. (I use an immersion blender right in the crockpot.) However, you can also transfer the apple mixture to a blender and puree it that way.
  • Once the apple butter is pureed, you can adjust the thickness by leaving the apple butter in the crockpot on LOW and uncovering it. It will slowly thicken that way.
  • Stir occasionally, to prevent sticking to the sides of the crockpot. (I typically leave mine to simmer that way anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.)When the apple butter is finished, transfer it immediately into sterile canning jars.

2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
Dash of salt
3/4 cup water or fresh apple cider

Steps:

  • Fill Crock-pot 3/4 full with cored and sliced apples.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir until evenly mixed.
  • Cover and cook on low setting overnight or until the butter is of a thick, spreadable consistency.
  • Use immersion blender to purée and incorporate skins into the apple butter.
  • If apple butter has too much liquid, remove lid and cook on high until thickened. Stir often as butter thickens to prevent scorching.

5 lbs. apples (any variety) ((or up to 7 lbs. -- however many you need to fill up your slow cooker))
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon allspice
¼ cup water

Steps:

  • Peel, core, and quarter the apples.
  • Spray the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray and place the apples inside. I use as many apples as it takes to fill up my slow cooker!
  • Add remaining ingredients to slow cooker and stir to combine.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for 4-6 hours.
  • Uncover, give it a good stir, and continue cooking uncovered for an additional 2 hours on LOW or 1 hour on HIGH. This will allow the apple butter to cook down and thicken.
  • Use a hand blender to puree until smooth. If you don't have a hand blender, transfer to a regular blender and puree in batches.
  • Store in mason jars in the refrigerator for a few weeks, or keep in the freezer. If you want to store the apple butter in a pantry, be sure to follow proper canning procedures (sterilizing and processing jars). See the canning instructions in the notes below.

I love applebutter, but I'm not fond of all of the spices in most. I have made this recipe about 4 or 5 times now and everyone who has tried it agree that it is wonderful. It takes a while to make, but so worth it! The cooking time is really about 30 hours, but I didn't have that option. I only started canning when I found this recipe and made my adjustments last year and now I'm canning lots of things! If you like applebutter and you like cinnamon, this is for you! Enjoy!

16 cup(s) mcintosh/or jonagold apples
1 cup(s) apple juice or apple cider
8 cup(s) sugar
4 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
1/2 cup(s) apple vinegar

Steps:

  • Peel, core and slice apples thinly. In 5 quart crockpot, pour in the apple juice or cider on bottom, then layer in the apples, pack firmly, put on the top and put on low, cook for 12 hours, stir the apples,then add sugar and vinegar. Next morning add cinnamon, remove the lid, put on high and cook about another 4 to 6 hours. Use either a hand mixer or emersion blender to blend thoroughly. It the mixture is too loose cook until you reach the decided consistency. This should make about 8-10 1/2 pint jars. Sterilize jars, lids, fill jars, wipe rims, place lids and bands, put in hot water bath for 20 minutes after the water boils. It can also be frozen in freezer jars.
  • The original recipe calls for 4 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ground cloves and 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. I omitted these two spices as I don't care for them, but, it you like them, just reduce the cinnamon by 1 teastpoon.
