Crock Pot Potluck Pierogies With Sauteed Onions and Butter image

Great idea for a football party, graduation party, any potluck get-together. I was assigned a hot side dish for a potluck work luncheon, served aside of hot dogs and other party appy's, and decided to try this out in the crockpot and it worked. It went over well; many people went back for seconds and came looking for the leftovers the next day.....it was the only dish that was gone! Very simple indeed, but it's one of those dishes that you hardly lift a finger yet it goes a long way. Would go great aside of hamburger BBQ, sausage sandwiches, bratwurst, hamburgers, etc or make as a main dish. Perfect if you don't have an oven or have limited oven space for your party cooking. I have figured on 16 servings/3 pierogies per person and prep time includes sautee of onion and butter.

48 pierogies (I buy Mrs. T's, 48 pierogies will fill up a 5 qt crockpot)
16 tablespoons unsalted butter (1 cup)
1 large white onion, chopped
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Place frozen pierogies in the crockpot.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt butter and fry onion on medium-low heat, until onion is golden brown.
  • Pour onion and butter over pierogies; add salt and pepper.
  • Cook, on high, for 3 hours.
  • A few times during cooking, use tongs and gently re-arrange pierogies and ladle butter sauce to cover pierogies on top.
  • Turn to low or keep warm once pierogies are cooked and/or butter sauce begins to bubble.

Dress up frozen perogies to taste like they were made from scratch by simply slow cooking them with chopped onions and bacon.

1 package (16 ounce size) frozen perogies
1 cup diced onions
1/2 cup diced bacon

Steps:

  • Place the perogies in the crock pot. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and bacon to the skillet. Cook, stirring, until the onion is soft (the bacon should not be crisp). Pour the contents of the skillet over the perogies. Stir gently to coat them in the mixture. Cover the crock pot and cook on low heat for 3 hours. Stir (gently) once or twice during the cooking time. Serve the perogies with sour cream, if desired.

3 tablespoons butter
1 head cabbage, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 pound bacon
4 (16.9 ounce) packages frozen pierogies
3 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Stir in the cabbage and onion. Cook and stir until the cabbage is tender, about 20 minutes.
  • Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate. Cut the bacon into bite-sized pieces; set aside.
  • Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, stir in the pierogies and return to a boil. Cook until the pierogies float to the top, about 5 minutes; drain.
  • Place the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter into a slow cooker. Gently combine the pierogies, cabbage, and bacon; and place into the slow cooker. Cook on Low for 3 hours before serving.

1 stick of butter (divided)
1 large onion (sliced thin)
1 bag of Oscar Meyer Bacon recipe pieces
2 boxes of Ms 's Pierogies (I like one box potato and cheese and another with sauerkraut)
1 package of skinless polish kielbasa (cut up)
1 pint of heavy cream
1 tablespoon of white balsamic vinegar
2 slices of Muenster cheese
8 oz sour cream

Steps:

  • First thing want to do is lightly spray the crock pot with a cooking spray, this help with the pierogies sticking to the crock pot. After that, place 4 tablespoons of the butter in the crock pot, and turn the crock pot on high. This is going to melt the butter.
  • Next, melt the rest the butter in a fry pan and saute the onions, saute them till they are just starting to get golden.
  • Once the onions are starting to turn golden, add the bacon to the onions, and let them cook for about a minute together, stir constantly in that minute.
  • Next, add the balsamic vinegar and heavy cream to the onion mixture. reduce the heat and let it simmer for 3-5 minutes. make sure your stirring so you do not burn.
  • Next add the muenster cheese to the sauce and turn the heat off. You just want it to melt into it, takes about a minute for this. stir and set the sauce aside. You can use another cheese, I happen to have this cheese and I was surprised how good it made the sauce.
  • The butter should be melted or half way there in the crock pot, add the kielbasa to the crock pot.
  • Layer the pierogies on top the kielbasa. I like to use both potato and sauerkraut, that just a taste thing but you can use all potato kinds if you choose.
  • Pour the onion mixture on top the pierogies
  • Top it off with the sour cream. Cover and let it cook on high for about 4 hours. Half way to cooking give the crock pot a stir, so the butter comes up and the sauce is coming down. Plus it helps with the pierogies sticking.
  • Take some out the pot and ENJOY!

I wanted to post my take on another crock pot pierogie recipe that I found on here since the technique and ingredients are a little different. I did it this way and didn't have to stir or move the pierogies around. They did get a little crispy on the edges after a while, so I think I will turn it down to warm next time.

4 (12 count) boxes cheddar pierogies
water, to boil pierogies
1 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled (or you can use real bacon bits)
1 cup butter, melted
1 large onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Boil pierogies according to package directions (I boiled water in a large stock pot and added all of the pierogies at once). Drain.
  • Spray crock of crock pot with cooking spray or add liner to keep pierogies from sticking.
  • Cook bacon until done enough to crumble. Cool on paper towels. Reserve 2 Tbsp grease to cook onions.
  • Reheat bacon grease and cook onions over medium/high heat in bacon grease until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add butter to pan until melted. Stir bacon back into pan with butter onion mixture.
  • Place a layer of pierogies in the crock pot. Drizzle butter mixture over the top. Repeat these steps until all pierogies are in the crock pot. Drizzle any leftover butter mixture over the top. Try to split it up between layers it so 75% of it is gone when you reach the top.
  • Cover and turn crock pot to low to keep heat we had it on low for about 6 hours and the edges started to get crunchy (which we liked). Turn to warm if this is a problem.
