Easy Crock Pot Steak and Gravy image

Make an easy crock pot round steak with just a few ingredients, including cube steaks, gravy from a package mix, and condensed soup.

Dash pepper
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup beef stock (unsalted, or water)
1 envelope onion gravy mix
1 (10 3/4-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup

Steps:

  • Serve the steak and gravy with mashed potatoes or rice, along with a salad or your family's favorite vegetables. Enjoy!

Making this recipe in the slow cooker eliminates the traditional tasks of pounding the meat and watching the frying pan. It also produces melt in your mouth results. The rich, spicy pan gravy served over mashed potatoes is a marriage made in heaven. To turn up the heat, increase the quantity of jalapeno pepper. This needs a large minimum 5 quart slow cooker.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 lbs round steaks (see note)
2 onions, thinly sliced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black peppercorns, cracked
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup chicken stock
1 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup whipping cream
1 -2 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped
mashed potatoes, hot and fluffy

Steps:

  • In a skillet, heat oil over medium high heat for 30 seconds. Add steak, in pieces, if necessary, and brown on both sides. Transfer to slow cooker stoneware.
  • Reduce heat to medium. Add onions to skillet and cook, stirring, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add garlic, salt and peppercorns and cook, stirring, for 1 minutes. Sprinkle flour over mixture and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add stock and cook, stirring, until thickened. Sauce will be very thick.
  • Spoon sauce over meat in slow cooker, cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours or on High for 4 hours, until meat is tender.
  • In a small bowl, combine paprika and cayenne. Gradually add cream, mixing until blended. Add to stoneware along with jalapeno pepper. Cover and cook on HIGH for 15 minutes, until flavors meld. Serve with hot, fluffy mashed potatoes.
  • TIP: While round steak is traditionally used for this dish, an equally successful version can be made with "simmering steak." This is cut from the blade or cross rib and is available at many supermarkets. Serves 6.

1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
1 (10.5 ounce) can beef gravy
4 (6 ounce) boneless beef round steaks
2 teaspoons salt-free Greek seasoning
1 (.87 ounce) package dry chicken gravy mix
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, sliced into rings

Steps:

  • Mix together the cream of chicken soup and beef gravy in a slow cooker, cover, and set the cooker to Low.
  • With a meat tenderizing mallet or the edge of a small, sturdy plate, pound the beef round steaks on a work surface across the grain of the meat to make many small cuts across the meat fibers. Sprinkle Greek seasoning on both sides of the steaks, and sprinkle dry chicken gravy mix over the steaks to make a dry coating. Stir any excess dry gravy mix into the slow cooker.
  • Heat olive oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat. Pan-fry the steaks in the hot oil until browned on both sides, about 8 minutes. Place the steaks into the gravy mix in the slow cooker, spooning gravy over the steaks to moisten. Cook the onion rings in the hot skillet until browned, about 10 minutes, stirring often, and spread the onions over the steaks in the cooker.
  • Recover the cooker, and cook until meat is very tender and the gravy is thick, about 5 hours.

10.5 ounce can French onion soup
1/2 cup water
1 ½-2 pounds cube steak ((about 3-4 cubed steaks))
3 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons cold water

Steps:

  • In the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker, combine cream of chicken soup, French Onion soup, packet of au jus and water. Stir well.
  • Put cubed steak in slow cooker with gravy mixture.
  • Cover slow cooker and cook steak on low for 6-8 hours.
  • After cooking, it's time to thicken gravy. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and cold water. Stir mixture into crock pot.
  • Turn the setting to high and cook for 30 minutes (until gravy is thickened.)
