Steps:
- Peel pears. Core pears from bottom, leaving stems attached. Place pears upright in 3 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker.
- Mix remaining ingredients except cornstarch and orange juice; pour over pears.
- Cover and cook on high heat setting 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until tender.
- Remove pears from cooker; place upright in serving dish or individual dessert dishes.
- Mix cornstarch and orange juice; stir into sauce in cooker. Cover and cook on high heat setting about 10 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Spoon sauce over pears. Note: This recipe was tested in slow cookers with heating elements in the side and bottom of the cooker, not in cookers that stand only on a heated base. For slow cookers with just a heated base, follow the manufacturer's directions for layering ingredients and choosing a temperature.

SPICED RED PEARS IN WINE (CROCK POT)
This is one I'm considering for the holidays. It is originally from "125 Best Vegetarian Crock pot Recipes). The original says this is best in a 3 1/2 quart crock pot because that allows the pears to be submerged. This is served cold so it needs time to chill. Depending on the size of your pears you might need more wine.

Steps:
- Pour juice into the bottom of the Crock Pot.
- Lay pears on their sides in the juice, then add cinnamon sticks.
- Cover and cook on high for an hour or on low for two hours, opening the lid halfway through cooking to turn pears to their other side.
- Use tongs to transfer pears to plates.
- Pour juice through a fine mesh sieve into a saucepan. Add cinnamon sticks and bring to a boil over medium high heat. Boil the pear juice for about 15 minutes, or until you have reduced the volume by about 1/3 to a thin syrup consistency. (I dipped a clean toothpick in before boiling, noting how high the juice came up on the pick. As the mixture boiled down, I would insert another clean toothpick and compare the height of the boiled juice to the original pick)
- Remove the reduced pear syrup from the heat and stir in the walnuts.
- To serve, place pears on plates (1/2 of a large pear or 1 whole small pear), then ladle syrup and walnuts over them.

SLOW COOKER PEAR CIDER
This pear cider is great on it's own piping hot, but when you add a bit of spiced rum or bourbon it makes a pretty spectacular cool weather cocktail!

Steps:
- Cut the pears and orange into quarters. Seeds, peels and stems are OK. Place the fruit in the bottom of your slow cooker Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, ginger slices, nutmeg and cloves.
- Fill to the top of the slow cooker with water, leaving about an 1/4-1/2-inch of space at the top. Cook on high heat for 3-4 hours or on low heat for 6-8 hours.
- An hour before the cider is done cooking, use a potato masher to mash the fruit once it is softened. Cook for an additional hour.
- Strain the pear cider through a fine-mesh strainer or cheese cloth into a clean pitcher or pot, pressing on the solids to get all of the juice out of the fruit. Stir in the maple syrup until it is dissolved and serve hot.
- The cider can be stored in a heat-safe container for up to 5 days.
PEAR PRESERVES RECIPE

Steps:
- Combine pears, water, lemon juice, and brown sugar in the slow cooker. Set to high for 4 hours.
- When 4 hours has passed, blend the pear mixture with an immersion blender or mash until mostly smooth. Set to low for another 6 to 8 hours. The time will depend on how ripe the pears were initially. For overripe pears, 6 hours is plenty of time. Less ripe pears will likely take the full 8 hours.
- Stir and transfer to a mason jar or airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
