1/2 cup Crisco
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup water (milk, or dairy-free milk substitute)

Steps:

  • Place the Crisco, vanilla, and salt in a medium bowl. Beat with a mixer on high speed until light and fluffy.
  • Switch the mixer to low speed and alternate adding the powdered sugar and the liquid until the ingredients are completely blended.
  • Beat on high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, cream shortening until fluffy. Add sugar, and continue creaming until well blended.
  • Add salt, vanilla, and 6 ounces whipping cream. Blend on low speed until moistened. Add additional 2 ounces whipping cream if necessary. Beat at high speed until frosting is fluffy.

Being a professional cake decorator for more than 20 years, I have perfected the best homemade buttercream frosting recipe!! A cut above the rest, this vanilla buttercream frosting is fluffy, creamy and wonderfully rich! You can make your own frosting in 5 minutes using 4 ingredients. For this reason, it is one of the best basic buttercream recipes to have on hand.

Crisco, All-vegetable (white only) (1lb, 5oz) (587g) 3 cups
Powdered Sugar, Confectionery (10 cups) (1361g) 3 lbs
Water (or milk if coloring) (4.2oz) (118g) 1/2 cup
Salt, Iodized (0.3oz) (8g) 1 tsp.
Flavorings, (your favorite) (2.1oz) (60g) 3 1/2 Tbsp.

Steps:

  • Gather all of your ingredients to make this easy frosting.
  • First, combine the water/milk with the salt and stir to dissolve. Make sure to dissolve the salt in the liquid otherwise the salt will result in little bleached spots in your colored icing.
  • Second, add the flavorings to the water/milk mixture and stir to combine. My choice of flavorings are 1 1/2 tablespoons clear vanilla extract, 1 tablespoons almond extract, and 1 tablespoons butter extract/flavor.
  • Next, using a stand mixer place the shortening into the mixing bowl with a flat paddle. Beat on low speed for 1 minute to smooth out the shortening.
  • Following that, add 1 ½ pounds of the powdered sugar with ½ the flavoring liquid ingredients and mix about 1 minute until all is combined.
  • Then add the remaining powdered sugar and flavorings, mix until combined. Make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl. Finally, mix a couple more seconds but do not overmix.
  • Take note that if your frosting is too thick, beat in a water/milk, a few drops at a time. By the same token if your frosting becomes too thin beat in a little bit of powdered sugar until desired consistancy is achieved.

8 tablespoons cocoa powder
8 tablespoons hot water (coffee, or milk)
8 tablespoons Crisco shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Add the cocoa powder to a mixing bowl.
  • Pour the hot water over the cocoa powder and let it sit for a minute.
  • Add the Crisco, vanilla, and salt to the cocoa and mix on slow to blend.
  • Slowly add the powdered sugar while blending on slow until fully incorporated.
  • Once the powdered sugar is fully mixed in, beat on high for 1 - 2 minutes until fluffy.

  • Combine the butter and shortening in a large mixer bowl and beat until smooth and creamy.

3 teaspoon vanilla
3-4 Tablespoons of Evaporated Milk (can use milk)
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (optional - to make chocolate buttercream)

Steps:

  • Beat butter and shortening together on medium speed for a few minutes.
  • Turn down your mixer to slowest speed and slowly add sugar, vanilla.
  • Turn mixer back to medium speed and **add milk /one tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency. beat for about 3-5 more minutes the less milk, the stiffer the batter- which is best if you are cake decorating if you get your frosting too thin, add powdered sugar to stiffen back up.

  • Cream shortening and vanilla in mixer for 2-4 minutes. Add in powder sugar, one cup at a time. If you find your mixer struggling, slowing add in milk. Use more milk for a creamy consistency, use less milk for a stiff consistency.
  • Use 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup shortening. Place room temp. butter and shortening in mixer. Put entire bag of powder sugar on top, then add vanilla and 1/2 cup milk. Turn mixer on low and mix until all ingredients are incorporated. Turn mixer up to med-high and mix for 2-4 minutes. Can add more milk to reach desired consistency.
