This is a nice soft center sugar cookie.

1 ¼ cups white sugar
1 cup butter
3 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cream of tartar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets.
  • Cream together sugar and butter. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla.
  • Add flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Stir.
  • Form dough into walnut size balls and place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Don't flatten. Bake 10 to 11 minutes, until tops are cracked and just turning color.

These are an old-fashioned favorite that my family loves. Kids can help by rolling them in confectioners' sugar and placing on greased baking sheets.

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup canola oil
2 eggs
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, beat sugar and oil until blended. Beat in eggs, chocolate and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to sugar mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours., With sugared hands, shape dough into 1-in. balls. Roll in confectioners' sugar. Place 2 in. apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until set. Remove to wire racks to cool.

1 cup shortening
1-3/4 cups sugar, divided
2 large eggs, room temperature
2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, cream shortening and 1-1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs. In another bowl, whisk flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture., In a small bowl, mix cinnamon and remaining sugar. Shape dough into 1-in. balls; roll in cinnamon sugar. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets., Bake 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 2 minutes before removing to wire racks to cool.

This is a family favorite sugar cookie recipe handed down to me from my mom. When my husband was deployed to Iraq, he was always excited to receive a box of these in the mail. I always make sure to watch these closely and take them out of the oven before they brown. If they brown, they will end up too hard and crunchy.

2 cups white sugar
½ cup butter, softened
½ cup vegetable oil
3 egg yolks
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 pinch salt
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup white sugar, for rolling

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
  • Beat 2 cups sugar, butter, and vegetable oil with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Add egg yolks one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the butter mixture before adding the next. Sift flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt into the egg yolk mixture; stir. Stir in vanilla extract. Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls.
  • Spread 1/4 cup sugar onto a flat surface. Roll the balls of dough in sugar to coat. Arrange onto baking sheets spaced at least 2 inches apart.
  • Bake in preheated oven cooked in the middle, but not yet browned, about 15 minutes.

1/2 cup shortening
2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 egg yolks
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour

Steps:

  • In large bowl, beat butter and shortening on high for 30 seconds.
  • Add sugar, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt and beat until combined.
  • Beat in egg yolks and vanilla until combined.
  • Mix in flour until well combined.
  • Shape into 1 inch balls and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes or until tops are just slightly crackled and sides are set.
  • Do not let edges brown -- if they do they are over done and will not be tender.
  • Transfer to wire rack to cool.
  • May freeze up to 3 months.

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Lightly grease two baking sheets.
  • Cream sugar and butter together until light.
  • Beat in yolks and vanilla.
  • Sift together the measured sifted flour, baking soda and cream of tartar then fold into the butter sugar mixture.
  • Form dough into walnut size balls.
  • Place 2" apart on the cookie sheets.
  • Do not flatten.
  • Bake for about 11 minutes until the tops are cracked and just turning color.
  • Cool on cookie sheet 2 minutes.
