This Authentic tres leches cake recipe is fluffy vanilla cake filled with a combination of three kids of milk and topped with homemade vanilla whipped cream frosting. The one cake that's associated with birthday parties, graduations, baptisms, and all kind of celebrations (I guess we always have a good excuse to celebrate!). Many people love Tres Leches cake.

Butter to grease the pan
1 ¼ cup All Purpose Flour (sifted (plus extra for dusting pan))
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt*
1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted and cooled (1 stick))
1 cup sugar
5 whole eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 can condensed milk NESTLE LA LECHERA (14oz)
1 can Evaporated milk CARNATION (12oz)
1 cup of Heavy Heavy whipping or 1 can of "Media Crema Nestle"
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 Tablespoons rum or brandy (optional)
1 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream (the one you buy at the dairy fridge section)
4 Tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Canned fruit like peaches (mangos or fresh fruit like strawberries and kiwis. If using fruit to decorate, add just before serving.)

Steps:

  • Turn the oven to 325 degrees F. Make sure to adjust the oven rack to the middle position. grease and flour a 13-by-9 inch pan and set aside. For a taller cake, use an 8 x 8-inch pan. Set it aside. If you check the pictures, this cake is not tall.
  • Place flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium-size bowl and whisk together to mix.
  • With an electric mixer, beat the eggs one by one on a medium speed, for about 45-60 seconds, and slowly add the sugar as in a light dusting, until all sugar is incorporated. The egg mix will be very fluffy and be turning a light yellow.
  • Reduce speed of mixer, and slowly add the melted butter, little bit little, and then the vanilla. Keep the mixer running in low. (The butter HAS to be melted and cool if not, it will flatten your bubbles, meaning flat cake)
  • Add the flour in batches (spoon by spoon) and gently fold with a spatula until well combined. DO NOT OVER MIX.
  • Transfer batter to your prepared pan using a rubber spatula to help you spread the evenly. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until cake looks light golden or a wooden toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the cake.
  • Remove the cake and transfer to a wired rack to cool completely. Poke the top of the cake using a toothpick, skewer or fork all over.

For Cake:
6 eggs (yolks and whites separated)
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups self-raising flour
4 tbsp. ice water
For The Tres Leches Syrup:
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 can evaporated milk
2 cups whole milk
1/4 cup rum (optional)
For Topping:
Whipped Cream

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF (180ºC). Grease and lightly flour a 9x13 inch rectangular baking dish (pyrex glass baking dish is good), or a round spring form cake pan will also work see note below: Set aside.
  • Beat the 6 egg whites until soft peaks form. Add the sugar and self-raising flour, the 6 egg yolks and the ice water.
  • Pour batter into prepared pan, and bake in oven at 350ºF for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. (Make the Tres Leches Syrup while cake is baking). Remove cake from oven and place cake (Do NOT remove cake from baking dish) on wire cooling rack.
  • Note: I used a round spring form pan did not remove the cake but it took about 45 minutes to cook instead of 25-30.
  • To Make The Tres Leches Syrup:
  • In a large bowl combine the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk and the 2 cups whole milk. Mix well. Stir in a little rum if desired.
  • With a fork, toothpick or wooden skewer, poke holes all over top of cake and pour the Tres Leches syrup over the top of cake until completely absorbed.
  • Once cake has cooled sufficiently, refrigerate cake in baking dish for at least 3 hours or preferably overnight before frosting with whipped cream
  • Makes 9 - 12 servings.

¾ cup butter, softened
1 ½ cups white sugar
9 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 cup milk
9 egg whites
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 (5 ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 cup white sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla. Sift together the flour and baking powder. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk; beat well after each addition. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until whites form stiff peaks. Gently fold the egg whites into the cake batter using a rubber spatula. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the 2 cups heavy cream, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. Pour the mixture over the cake until it wont absorb any more. You may have 1/3 to 1/4 left over. That's okay.
  • Combine the whipped cream and sugar, spread over soaked cake. Refrigerate cake until serving, Pour leftover milk mixture onto plates and swirl in jam if desired, before setting cake on the plates.

This is anoher recipe that came from my time in Costa Rica. My cousin's husband is from C.R. and when we went to visit them, his mother made this Tre Leches cake for us. It was amazing!!! I got the recipe from her to pass along to everyone else. You have to make this!! It is so good!

6 eggs
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
14 ounces condensed milk
14 ounces evaporated milk
2 cups whipped cream
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • Separate the eggs.
  • Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks and then add the 3 egg yokes 1 at a time.
  • Add the sugarr, baking powder, and flour.
  • Bake in a greased 13x9 pan at 350 for 15 minutes.
  • Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
  • When cool, poke holes in the cake with a fork all over.
  • In a blender, lightly mix condensed milk, evaporated milk, and 1 cup of the whipped cream.
  • Pour over cake & then top with the other cup of whipped cream.

5 white eggs, then 5 yolks
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 pinch of salt

Steps:

  • Beat the white eggs in until merengue, then add little by little the sugar (add it like rain). Then add the yolks. Stop the mixer and star adding the flour and baking powder and salt (previouly mixed together). All ingredients mix with the metalic spoon in a rounding movement and last add the vanilla. Finish up. Set the mix in the pyrex and cook for 25 minutes or golden brown on 350 F. While is baking, mix one can condensed milk, one can evaporated milk and one can of regular milk (use the condensed milk container to mesure it). Put all ingredients in the blender for 2 minutes. Add to the cake inmediately coming out of the oven, and already pinched fork all over the top.
