My husband didn't like sloppy joes until he tried my rendition with its smoky heat. If you need to dial down the fiery zip, cut down on or eliminate the peppers. -Brittany Allyn, Mesa, Arizona

1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
1 cup finely chopped sweet onion
1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped, optional
1/2 cup chili sauce
1/2 cup water
1 to 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, finely chopped
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
6 kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, split
2 tablespoons butter, softened
Pickle slices, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler. In a large skillet, cook beef, onion, green pepper and, if desired, jalapeno over medium heat until beef is no longer pink, breaking up beef into crumbles, 5-7 minutes; drain., Stir in chili sauce, water, chipotle peppers, brown sugar and mustard; bring to a boil. Simmer, uncovered, until slightly thickened, 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally., Lightly spread cut sides of rolls with butter; arrange on a baking sheet, buttered side up. Broil 3-4 in. from heat until lightly toasted, about 30 seconds. Fill with beef mixture and, if desired, pickles. Freeze option: Freeze cooled meat mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if necessary. Prepare sandwiches as directed.

This easy sloppy joe recipe is a bit different than your traditional sweet homemade sloppy joes! I've turned them into chili sloppy joes and they couldn't be tastier!

1 pound ground beef
1 diced sweet onion (divided)
2 tablespoons chili seasoning mix
2 tablespoons brown sugar
12 ounces tomato sauce
6 hamburger buns
1/2 cup shredded cheddar (for topping)

Steps:

  • Add the ground beef to a large skillet and cook over medium heat, crumbling as it cooks.
  • Add half of the diced onion when the meat is nearly cooked through and continue cooking until meat is no longer pink and onions are soft.
  • Drain grease from the skillet and add the chili seasoning and brown sugar. Stir to coat the meat.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce. Continue cooking, stirring often, for 5 minutes.
  • Spoon the meat onto the hamburger buns and top with the shredded cheese and remaining diced onions, as desired.

1 1/2 pounds ground beef ((85/15))
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
1 white onion (chopped and divided)
1 green bell pepper (diced)
1 clove garlic (minced)
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 cups tomato puree
1/4 cup ketchup
1 cup beef broth
1 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a large skillet on medium high heat add the beef, salt, pepper, 3/4 of the onions and green bell pepper, cooking well, breaking it apart but leaving some chunks for about 5-6 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to medium and add in the garlic, chili powder, cumin, brown sugar, tomato puree, ketchup and beef broth, cooking until the sauce starts to evaporate and the mixture becomes "sloppy" (about 5-6 minutes).
  • Spoon the mixture onto the brioche buns and top with sour cream, remaining white onion and shredded cheddar cheese.

1 cup chopped yellow onion
1 cup finely chopped celery
1 (12 ounce) bottle tomato-based chili sauce
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard

Steps:

  • Crumble the ground beef into a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring frequently until evenly browned. Drain off grease. Add the onion and celery, and cook until the onion is tender, about 3 minutes.

Our hearty sloppy joes are loaded with filling chili! They make the perfect game day treats and can be whipped up in just an hour.

15 or 6 to 8 regular hamburger rolls slider rolls
1 lb lean ground beef
½ finely diced onion
3 minced garlic cloves
1 cup drained and rinsed kidney beans
Cheddar Cheese
For Sauce:
2½ tbsp chili powder
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 chopped green pepper
14 oz canned, lightly drained diced tomatoes
12 oz tomato sauce
1½ tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp cider vinegar
For Topping:
½ cup butter
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1½ tbsp onion flakes
½ tsp poppy seeds
1 tsp chili powder
3 dashes hot sauce

Steps:

  • Brown the ground beef, onions and garlic until no pink remains. Drain any fat.
  • Sauce:
  • Stir in the chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, green pepper, tomatoes, tomato sauce, brown sugar, and cider vinegar in pot, and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Let simmer 10 to 15 minutes or until thickened.
  • Stir in the beans. Set aside.
  • Preheat the grill to medium-high on one side
  • Place the slider buns in a pan or cast iron skillet.
  • Top with the meat mixture and cheddar cheese.
  • Topping:
  • Combine the butter, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, onion flakes, poppy seeds, chili powder, and hot sauce in a bowl.
  • Gently spoon the topping over the rolls.
  • Cook over indirect heat for 18 to 23 minutes or until the cheese melts and the filling is heated through.
  • Serve warm, and enjoy!
