CHAMPION CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

This recipe, taken from a 1988 Ladies' Home Journal, won me a blue ribbon at the county fair when I was a teenager.

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (12 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup pecans, chopped

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°.
  • In medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt.
  • In mixer bowl cream butter, shortening and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Beat in dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in chips and nuts.
  • Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto 2 ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 12 minutes or until just golden (although my note on the recipe states 9-10 minutes, so watch the first batch!).
  • Transfer to wire racks and cool completely.

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup cold butter or 1/2 cup margarine
2 cups Hershey's semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided (12 oz. pkg)
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F.
  • Stir together flour and brown sugar in medium bowl; cut in cold butter until crumbly. Stir in 1/2 cup chocolate chips; press mixture on bottom of ungreased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan. Bake 15 minutes.
  • Combine sweetened condensed milk, egg and vanilla in large bowl. Stir in remaining 1-1/2 cups chips and nuts. Spread evenly over hot baked crust.
  • Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars.

My DH and brothers when crazy for these cookies. But who can resist Snickers Candy Bars chopped into a cookie!! I'm not even sure where I found this recipe.

2/3 cup shortening
1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 (2 1/8 ounce) Snickers candy bars, chopped
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, cream shrtening and brown sugar.
  • Beat in egg and vanilla.
  • combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; gradually add to the cramed mixture.
  • Stir in chopped candy bars and oats.
  • Drop by rounded Tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased or parchment-lined baking sheets.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Remove to wire racks to cool.
