This healthy easy ketchup recipe for kids and toddlers is a better-for-you option to sugary condiments and dips and is perfect for fries, burgers, chicken nuggets and more!

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 vidalia onion (diced)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
5.5 oz tomato paste
680 ml tomato passata
1/3 cup medjool dates (minced and packed)
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
¼ tsp ground dried cloves
1/8 tsp dried allspice
½ tsp dried oregano
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
½ tsp salt
Pepper (to taste)

Steps:

  • Add the olive oil to a medium skillet over medium low heat. Add the onion and cook until it begins to caramelize, about 45 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until very aromatic, sweet and caramelized, about another 15 minutes. Set aside.
  • To a pot, add the tomato paste, passata, dates, vinegars, cloves, allspice, oregano, thyme, salt, pepper and the caramelized onions. Allow to cook, covered, on low for 15 minutes until the dates are very soft, then transfer to the food processor or blender to puree until smooth. Season with pepper, to taste. Serve with fries, or on a burger.

1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1 shallot, peeled and chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 large Spanish onion
1 Vidalia onion, finely chopped
3 cipollini onions, finely chopped
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup fat-free Greek yogurt
1 cup reduced-fat cream cheese
3 scallions, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
1 bunch fresh chives, chopped (about 3 tablespoons)

Steps:

  • In a large saute pan over medium heat, add the olive oil. Add the thyme, shallots, garlic and all the varieties of onions. Saute, stirring constantly. (Onions absorb oil quickly, so add more if necessary.) Continue to cook until the vegetables are lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper. Let cool slightly.
  • In a medium bowl, add the yogurt and cream cheese and stir together. Add in the onions, scallions and chives. Stir well to combine.

1/4 cup butter, cubed
2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon salt
8 garlic cloves, minced
2 cups grape tomatoes, halved
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil, divided
1 package (16 ounces) uncooked angel hair pasta
9 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
2/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
Fresh basil leaves, optional

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add the onions, pepper flakes and salt; saute until onions are tender. Stir in garlic. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes or until onions are deep golden brown., Add the tomatoes, vinegar and 2 tablespoons oil to the skillet. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain pasta; toss with onion mixture., Drizzle with remaining olive oil. Sprinkle with bacon, cheese, and pepper; heat through. Garnish with basil if desired.

2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons oil (canola)
4 large white onions (thick sliced)
4 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon brown food coloring (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Over medium heat, heat skillet before placing in butter and oil.
  • Add onion, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar.
  • Cook uncovered over medium heat, moving the onions around, until onions begin to get browned; approx.
  • 8-10 minutes.
  • Cover and reduce heat to medium-low and cook for an additional 13-15 minutes.
  • The onions will sweat down and be glossy and soft.
  • *(At this point for visual affects, I add 1/2 tsp. Gravy Master or Kitchen Bouquet) to give it a rich brown color.
  • Can be made in advance; freezes very well for the next Sunday roastbeef dinner.
  • Serve with hamburgers, roasts or steaks.

1 large whole head of garlic
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
9 cups thinly sliced sweet onions
2 1/2 cups sliced leeks
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried thyme
2 tablespoons flour
1/3 cup dry white wine
30 ounces chicken broth
2 cups milk
6 tablespoons sour cream
toasted caraway seed (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Remove the papery outer skin from garlic, but do not peel or separate cloves.
  • Rub 1-1/2 tsps oil over garlic head; wrap in foil and bake for one hour.
  • Let cool ten minutes; separate cloves and squeeze to extract garlic pulp.
  • Set pulp aside.
  • Heat remaining oil in a pot over medium heat; add onions and leeks and cook for 30 minutes, stirring often.
  • Add 1/2 tsp salt and thyme; cook an additional 30 minutes or until onions are golden.
  • Stir in flour; add wine and broth and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes.
  • Add garlic pulp, remaining salt and milk to onion mixture.
  • Simmer 8 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
  • Place half of the mixture in the blender and process until smooth; pour into a soup tureen or another pot and repeat with second half of mixture.
  • Garnish with sour cream and toasted caraway seeds (optional).
