° PUMPKIN PLUS ° PET BUNNY RABBIT TREATS

° Pumpkin Plus ° Pet Bunny Rabbit Treats image

Here's another treat my guy, Bunneh, adores. When I open the container near him, he goes ballistic. I mean CRAZY. It takes a bit of effort to keep him from forcefully nosing his way into the whole batch!

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 40m

Yield 10 dozen treats

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 cup old-fashioned oatmeal, ground into coarse powder (rolled oats)
2 cups whole wheat flour (plus extra for rolling dough)
1/2 cup canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling!)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup banana, ripe

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Combine dry ingredients in one bowl, wet in another.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet in 1/2 cup increments and blend with a hand mixer.
  • Pull off a large chunk of dough, sprinkle with a little flour, and roll it out to 1/8-inch-thick on top of either a silicone baking mat (i.e. Silpat) or parchment paper. You're going to roll it so thinly that you won't be able to move it from the surface you've rolled it on, so one of these two items is really necessary.
  • Score the rolled out dough with a large chef's knife to make 1-inch squares. You'll be able to more easily snap the cooked treats apart later.
  • With a toothpick, poke a hole in the center of each square. This will help prevent the treats from puffing up too much.
  • Transfer the silicone baking mat or parchment paper with the treats to a baking sheet for stability and bake for 20 minutes or until crispy.
  • While you don't want them burnt, you also don't want soft spots. Some of the treats in the center of the rolled out dough might need an extra few minutes. Alternately, you can let them dry further in the oven for an hour or so after you turn it off. Completely dried treats store better/longer!
  • Cool treats completely, break apart, and store in an airtight container.
  • Give no more than 1-2 treats daily and adore your appreciative bunny!

BUNNEH'S BUNNY RABBIT TREATS

Bunneh's Bunny Rabbit Treats image

Bunneh LOVES these! After he has his treat, he thanks me by licking a hole in my arm, or darned near! You could replace the carrot with apple or pear, but keep in mind these are treats, not a regular diet/food, and should be given sparingly. For a bunny, 1 tablespoon of fruit a day is the maximum you should give your furball. Timothy hay pellets are the best type of pellets, Zupreem the best brand. Recipe adapted from Brenda Plaxton's.

Time 35m

Yield 30 treats, approximately, 30 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 small carrot (pureed or minced VERY fine)
1/2 banana (mashed until very creamy)
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup rabbit pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder
1/4 cup ground old fashioned oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder

Steps:

  • Mix pureed carrot, mashed banana and honey in a medium bowl.
  • Add ground pellets and ground oats. Mix until blended.
  • Knead in your hands for 1-2 minutes. It'll probably be pretty sticky.
  • Place dough on large piece of parchment paper and cover with plastic wrap. Roll dough to about 1/8" thickness. Peel off plastic wrap.
  • Score flattened dough with large knife in 1-inch cross sections like tiles. You're not separating the tiles, just scoring them for easy breaking apart later.
  • Transfer parchment onto cookie sheet and bake at 325F for about 30-40 minutes, checking to make sure they don't over-brown.
  • Turn off the oven, leaving the cookie sheet in the oven for another hour until the treats dry to crispness.
  • Remove from oven and cool completely on cooling rack.
  • Break the tiles apart - easy! - and store in a zip lock bag in the fridge.
  • Give one to your bunny on each day that he/she is adorable. (That's every day, of course!).
