Craving bubble tea but don't want to keep spending so much money on it? Making your own is really easy - and much more customizable. You can buy tapioca pearls or boba from Walmart or Amazon (or your local Taiwanese store) then make the tea with a blend of your favorite black tea, sweetener, and half and half or non-dairy substitute. Just add ice and a wide straw, and you can have your favorite treat anytime!

Provided by Frank Tiu

Categories     Drinks

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 cups water
6 black tea bags
½ cup medium black tapioca pearls
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup hot water
½ cup tapioca pearls, cooked
½ cup ice
brown sugar syrup, to taste
1 cup black tea, chilled
¼ cup half & half
2 wide-opening straws

Steps:

  • In a medium pot over high heat, combine the water and tea bags. Bring to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat and let the tea cool to room temperature.
  • Bring a medium pot of water to boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, add the tapioca pearls and boil until softened, about 20 minutes.
  • Drain the pearls through a strainer.
  • Set the strainer with the pearls over a medium bowl. Add the brown sugar to the strainer and pour the hot water over.
  • Stir to dissolve the brown sugar. Soak the pearls in brown sugar syrup for 30 minutes, then store the bubbles and syrup separately until ready to serve.
  • Assemble the tea: Divide the pearls and ice between 2 glasses, then add the brown sugar syrup, tea, and half and half.
  • Stir with a wide-opening straw, then serve.
  • Enjoy!

It's simple but some of the ingredients may be a little tough to find. Just be patient and look for them in Chinese grocery stores. It is worth the trouble!

BUBBLE TEA (AN ASIAN DRINK)

Bubble Tea (an Asian drink) image

I tried this recipe 3 years ago and make it weekly. It is habit forming. so good with a little added bonus a bit of chewing. A must for those who like The basic Brittish tea - tea with milk and sugar.

Provided by Stormy Stewart

Categories     Other Drinks

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 oz tapioca pearls (see recipe below)
sugar syrup (see below in directions for recipe)
1 c brewed tea (chinese black tea or lychee tea is good)
1 c milk (or to taste)
ice cubes

Steps:

  • 1. To make Tapioca Pearls 1 part tapioca pearls 4 parts (or more) water To make the tapioca pearls: When making the tapioca pearls, which are the chief ingredient in Asian bubble teas, please note that the pearls expand considerably when cooked. Please ensure that you use a large pot. (As a rule, the more pearls cooked, the more water should be used: that is, the water to pearl ratio must be higher. For 3kgs of pearls, we recommend using as much as 6 times as much water). Boil the water. Add the pearls to the boiling water and boil for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure the pearls are not sticking to each other or to the pot. Turn off heat and let the pearls steep in the water for another 30 minutes with the lid of the cooking pot on. Drain the tapioca pearls and rinse with cold water to cool them down. Place them in sugar syrup (sugar and water solution - see below). Make sure that the pearls are covered. Stir the pearls well. The pearls are now ready to enjoy.
  • 2. To make Sugar Syrup 2 parts white sugar 1 part brown sugar To make the sugar syrup: in a saucepan, bring the water to boil. Add the sugars. Reduce heat and heat until the sugar crystals are dissolved. Remove from heat. Note: Please feel free to experiment with the ratio of white sugar to brown sugar, and the ratio of the sugar to water. 3 parts water
  • 3. Directions: Prepare the sugar syrup for the tapioca pearls (see above). Prepare the tapioca pearls (see above) Place the tapioca pearls in the large glass jar Allow the tea to cool to room temperature. Add the milk. Remember the wild bar scenes in the Tom Cruise film Cocktail? Add the sugar syrup, milk and tea mix, and the ice cubes to a cocktail shaker and shake well. (Alternately you can process them in a blender, but that's not nearly as much fun!) Pour the shaken mixture into the glass with the tapioca pearls. Serve with a thick straw.
