MEXICAN-STYLE HOT CHOCOLATE



Mexican-Style Hot Chocolate image

Warm and creamy; simple chocolate flavors with a hint of cinnamon.

1 ½ cups cold water
½ cup white sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon salt
6 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Whisk cold water, sugar, cocoa powder, flour, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a saucepan until smooth. Place over low heat; bring to a simmer, whisking constantly, until mixture is thickened and hot, about 4 minutes. Stir in milk; heat until hot chocolate just forms bubbles around the edge. Mix vanilla extract into hot chocolate. Blend until smooth with an immersion blender to make the drink slightly frothy.

2 ounces baking chocolate
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 teaspoons instant coffee
2 cups hot water
2 cups hot milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a double boiler, melt the chocolate, then stir in the sugar, salt cinnamon and instant coffee.
  • Remove the top of the double boiler and warm over direct heat, adding ¼ c of the hot water, stirring for ½ minute.
  • Then, stirring constantly, add in the rest of the hot water and milk.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
  • Serve while still hot.
  • Enjoy!

  • Bring to the stove, over medium heat, and cook until the cocoa powder has dissolved and the mixture is hot, creamy and thick. Do not boil! If the hot cocoa is too thick, add milk to bring it to the desired consistency.
