THE BEST (AND MOST SIMPLE) BONE BROTH RECIPE + BONE BROTH BENEFITS

The BEST (and Most Simple) Bone Broth Recipe + Bone Broth Benefits image

Here's ALL you need to know about bone broth, its benefits, and how to make the BEST BONE BROTH OF YOUR LIFE (that's also the EASIEST) to ensure you are giving your body what it needs to be healthy.

Provided by honestandtasty

Categories     Appetizer/Side     Drink     Main

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 onions, chopped (if very large, use only 1)
3-4 pounds beef bones that have cartilage and some meat on them (i.e. knuckle bones, shank bones, oxtail, rib bones, femur bones)
1 tablespoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients to a large pot (or pressure cooker) and add enough water to just cover the bones. Let it boil and once it boils, turn it off so you can skim any scum that may have surfaced. (This is optional but some believe it to be helpful in keeping the taste pure. Sometimes I do it and sometimes I don't. Totally up to you.)
  • If using pressure cooker like InstantPot, put it on the pressure cooker setting on high for 3 hours and allow the pressure to naturally release when it's done. If using a regular pot over the stove, let it simmer for 12-16 hours. If using a slow-cooker, let it simmer for 12-16 hours.
  • Strain the cooked broth to keep the liquid gold you've just made.

BEEF BONE BROTH RECIPE

Beef Bone Broth Recipe image

Making this homemade recipe is one of the best ways you can reap all of the awesome beef bone broth benefits. Plus, making beef bone broth is a lot easier than you might think and is far healthier than store-bought versions.

Provided by Dr. Josh Axe

Categories     Soups

Time P2DT10m

Yield Varies

Number Of Ingredients 12

4 pounds beef bones with marrow
4 carrots, chopped
4 celery stalks, chopped
2 medium onions, peel on, sliced in half lengthwise and quartered
4 garlic cloves, peel on and smashed
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon whole peppercorns
2 bay leaves
3 sprigs fresh thyme
6 sprigs parsley
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
20 cups cold water

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients in a 10 quart capacity slow cooker or large stock pot on the stove.
  • Add in water.
  • Turn on the slow cooker and prepare to cook for at least 36 hours, so that might mean 3 cycles on the standard slow cooker that has a maximum 12-hour setting (unless you can set your slow cooker for 36 hours).
  • If cooking on a stovetop, bring the large pot to a boil over high heat; reduce and simmer gently.
  • In slow cooker or pot, skim the fat that rises to the surface occasionally.
  • Simmer for 36 to 48 hours.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  • Discard solids and strain remainder in a bowl through a colander. Let stock cool to room temperature, cover and chill.
  • Refrigerate and use within a week. Or freeze for up to 3 months.

BONE BROTH RECIPE (STOVE TOP OR INSTANT POT)

Bone Broth Recipe (Stove Top or Instant Pot) image

Make nourishing bone broth at home simmered on the stove top or in the Instant Pot in a fraction of the time.

Provided by Katie Wells

Categories     Soup

Time 8h10m

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 lbs bones (from a healthy source)
2 chicken feet ((optional))
1 gal water
2 TBSP apple cider vinegar
1 onion
2 carrots
2 stalks of celery
1 TBSP salt ((optional))
1 tsp peppercorns ((optional))
herbs and spices ((to taste, optional))
2 cloves garlic ((optional))
1 bunch parsley ((optional))

Steps:

  • If you are using raw bones, especially beef bones, it improves flavor to roast them in the oven first. I place them in a roasting pan and roast for 30 minutes at 350°F.
  • Place the bones in a large stock pot or the Instant Pot.
  • Pour cool filtered water and the vinegar over the bones. Let sit for 20-30 minutes in the cool water. The acid helps make the nutrients in the bones more available.
  • Rough chop and add the onion, carrots, and celery to the pot.
  • Add any salt, pepper, spices, or herbs, if using.

BEEF BONE BROTH

Beef Bone Broth image

Look for soup bones--including necks, shanks, knuckles, backs and marrow bones--at the meat department at your supermarket. (You may need to ask the butcher.) Be sure to roast the bones until they become very dark brown in color (almost burnt in some places) to give your broth the richest flavor and deepest color. To remove the most fat, refrigerate the broth overnight.

Categories     Healthy Beef Main Dish Recipes

Time 8h30m

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 pounds beef soup bones
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 medium carrots, cut into 2-inch pieces
4 stalks celery (with leaves), cut into 3-inch pieces
2 medium onions, quartered
2 medium tomatoes, halved
1 head garlic, halved crosswise
16 cups cold water
2 tablespoons cider vinegar (see Tip)
2 sprigs thyme
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
1 tablespoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • Arrange racks in upper and lower thirds of oven; preheat to 400 degrees F.
  • Place soup bones on a rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with oil. Roast on the bottom rack for 30 minutes.
  • Combine carrots, celery, onions, tomatoes and garlic on a second rimmed baking sheet. Move the bones to the upper rack and place the vegetables on the lower rack. Roast until the bones are deep brown and the vegetables are starting to brown in spots, 30 to 45 minutes more.
  • Transfer the bones and vegetables to a 10- to 12-quart stockpot. Add 1 cup water to the bone pan and scrape up any browned bits with a wooden spoon; add to the pot. Add the remaining 15 cups water, vinegar, thyme, bay leaves, peppercorns and salt. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a low simmer and cook, covered, for 8 hours.
  • Remove the bones (if desired, remove any meat from the bones and save for another use). Strain the broth through a large sieve into a large bowl; discard the solids. Skim fat from the surface, if desired.

SLOW-COOKER BONE BROTH

Slow-Cooker Bone Broth image

When it's warm it looks like beefy tea and when it's cold it looks like a savory gelatin. Some drink it for nourishment and others use it as a replacement for their morning coffee. Whatever your reason for liking bone broth, a slow cooker makes it easy to cook-and eliminates the need to simmer a pot over an open flame for 12 plus hours. Enjoy it plain, or try a few of our tried-and-tested flavor additions to customize and brighten your cup.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 13h25m

Yield about 2 quarts

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 pounds beef oxtails or short ribs
3 pounds beef bones, such as marrow, knuckle or neck bones
3 tablespoons tomato paste
3 medium carrots, cut into large pieces
3 stalks celery, cut into large pieces
1 onion, quartered
3 cloves garlic, smashed
5 sprigs fresh parsley
3 bay leaves
12 black peppercorns
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
crushed lemongrass

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 F.
  • Arrange the oxtails and bones on a baking sheet and rub all of the pieces with the tomato paste. Roast the bones until very brown in spots, about 45 minutes.
  • Transfer the roasted bones to a 7-quart slow cooker. Use a metal spatula to scrape up any of the brown bits from the baking sheet and add them to the slow cooker, too. Nestle in the carrots, celery, onion, garlic, parsley and bay leaves. Toss in the peppercorns. Pour in the vinegar and 8 cups water (the water should just cover the bones and vegetables).
  • Set your slow cooker to low and cook anywhere from 12 to 24 hours, the broth will be deeper and stronger in flavor the longer it cooks.
  • Once you've decided the broth is ready, remove the insert and transfer the bones and pieces of meat to a baking sheet with tongs. Strain the remaining broth through a fine sieve. Let cool to room temperature. Let the bones cool and pick off and reserve any good-looking pieces of meat to add to soups and stews.
  • Store the bone broth in airtight containers for up to 5 days in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer. Serve hot with desired mix-ins.

BEEF BONE BROTH

Beef Bone Broth image

This is a very basic beef bone broth recipe that you can make as a Sunday project. Freeze the broth for use within six months. If desired, refrigerate before freezing so that you can skim off any hard fat that forms or solidifies on the top.

Provided by Diana71

Categories     Soups, Stews and Chili Recipes     Broth and Stock Recipes

Time 13h10m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 10

3 ½ pounds beef bones, such as oxtail, short rib, knuckle, and shank
2 stalks celery, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 large onion, cut into 8 pieces
1 medium leek - roots trimmed off, cleaned, and cut into 2-inch pieces
1 whole head garlic, halved crosswise
12 cups water, or as needed
2 bay leaves, or more to taste
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Place beef bones on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Roast bones in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, turning over at the halfway point.
  • Carefully place bones into a large stockpot and pour in any juices that have collected on the baking sheet. Add celery, onion, leek, and garlic to the stockpot, and add just enough water to completely cover the bones. Stir in bay leaves, vinegar, salt, and pepper.
  • Bring broth to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to a very low simmer and cover, venting the lid a bit. Simmer for 12 hours, occasionally skimming off any foam and "gunk" that rises to the top. Add additional water whenever bones and vegetables are no longer covered.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and cool broth to room temperature. Strain broth with a fine-mesh strainer into a clean pot. Discard bones and vegetables.

15 IDEAS & RECIPES FOR HOW TO USE BONE BROTH EVERY DAY

From irenamacri.com
  • Just sip on it. Let’s start with something simple and straight forward. Heat the broth, pour it in a mug and sip it slowly. A lot of people hit a cup of warm broth first thing in the morning in place of coffee; I prefer to have a small bowl seasoned with a little garlic and fresh coriander before my main meal at dinner time.
  • Use bone broth in a soup. This is an obvious go-to use of bone broth but I thought I should mention it anyway. Any soup that calls for ready-made stock or stock cubes can be upgraded into something much more nutritious with some heavy-duty bone broth.
  • In a stuffing. While traditional Thanksgiving stuffing isn’t something you’d consider the healthiest item on the menu, it can be nutrient-dense and beneficial.
  • Use bone broth in a gravy. A Thanksgiving classic just got a little healthier with this recipe from Raising Generation Nourished. This 5-minute gravy with bone broth contains collagen – one of the many beneficial elements which will help to heal your body and gut.
  • Make cauliflower rice with it. Cauliflower rice is a healthy staple side dish these days, and for a good reason. It’s rich with vitamins C, K, B and folate, and packs enough fibre to keep you on schedule.
  • In mashed potato. My personal favourite comfort food – mashed potatoes – is fantastic with added bone broth. The dish becomes a little tastier – and a lot healthier!
  • In a marinade. This bone broth marinated chicken from Bare Bones Broth Co. packs an entire day’s worth of protein into one meal, as well as many other nutrients (like B vitamins, selenium and choline).
  • Use bone broth in stews. Stews are traditionally rich with nutrients, and the addition of bone broth only adds more health benefits. Whenever you make a stew, try adding some bone broth to the mix.
  • With poached eggs. A great recipe for breakfast, this bone broth-based meal also works for dinner and features the beneficial nutrients found in kale.
  • With scrambled eggs. While we’re talking about eggs, why not try adding a little bone broth to your morning scrambled eggs. For a perfect healing breakfast, add some turmeric powder and chopped coriander (cilantro) to the mix as well.
