BLUE-FOOTED BOOBY

Blue-Footed Booby image

This sweet, creamy drink is named after the long-winged seabirds that breed off the Pacific coast of South America. I found the recipe on the cruisecritic.com website. It uses a sugarcane-based liqueur called Cana Manabita that is produced in Ecuador. If you cannot find Cana Manabita, Brazilian Cachaca is a nice substitute. Or, as a third option, you could use a good-quality rum (though it won't produce exactly the same taste as either of the South American liqueurs). The datbase doesn't recognize Cana Manabita, so I hope I don't confuse anyone by the way I had to list that ingredient.

11 FAR OUT FACTS ABOUT THE BLUE-FOOTED BOOBY - EVERYWHERE WILD

From everywherewild.com
Published 2017-02-12
  • The blueness of their feet comes from their diet of fresh fish. It’s actually a substance called carotenoid; these are antioxidants that improve the immune system.
  • Male and female are nearly identical. However, they do have various distinguishing marks. The male is slightly smaller and has a soft whistle for a mating call, whereas the female is larger and utilizes a very loud honking noise.
  • Their nostrils are permanently sealed shut. Why you even need nostrils when they are utterly useless is anyone’s guess; perhaps they have a highly developed fashion sense.
  • Males mainly dive in shallow water. Since the males are smaller, they will tend to hunt closer to shore, leaving the deep dives to the heavier females.
  • A group of boobies is known as a “hatch,” “trap,” or “congress.” This was really interesting to me considering that most bird groups are called “flocks.”
  • Blue-footed boobies have a special air sac in their skulls to protect their brains. While not entirely accurate, bubble brain is a fitting name for a blue-footed booby.
  • The male dances to attract a mate. The male booby will dance for his bride by stomping around marching-band style proudly displaying his blue feet. They will then extend their wings outward and point blue bills skyward.
  • The female lays 2-3 small, bluish eggs. Both parents stay for about two months to care for the chicks. The chicks have such fluffy white feathers they will often appear larger than their parents.
  • Mates can recognize one another by their calls. Although they may sound quite similar to us, blue-footed boobies can tell each other apart by sound; each bird has its own unique call.
  • Blue-footed boobies will defecate around and on their eggs. Say what? That’s right! Blue-footed boobies build their nests in small depressions in the black lava.
