4 cups low-sodium tomato juice
1 clove garlic, grated on a rasp grater
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh dill, optional
1 teaspoon seafood seasoning, such as Old Bay
1 teaspoon celery seeds
2 tablespoons hot sauce, plus more if needed
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish, plus more if needed
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
Juice of 2 lemons
Freshly cracked black pepper
4 ounces bourbon
Ice, for serving
Beef jerky, for garnish

Steps:

  • In a pitcher, mix together the tomato juice, garlic, dill if using, seafood seasoning, celery seeds, hot sauce, horseradish, balsamic, lemon juice and some pepper. Taste for seasoning, adding more hot sauce or horseradish if preferred.
  • Fill 2 glasses with ice and divide the liquid between them. Add 2 ounces of the bourbon to each glass. Garnish with beef jerky.

The addition of Balsamic Vinegar is a surprise but also a delight if you love a good bloody mary. These have a kick. Great for the holidays! I understand this recipe comes from the FoodTV show "Molto Mario" by Mario Batali. I'm not exactly sure when and where I picked it up!

24 ounces vegetable cocktail
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
1 lime, juiced,plus
1 lime, cut into wedges
1 lemon, juiced
3 tablespoons freshly grated horseradish, divided
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
hot pepper sauce
8 ounces vodka
4 celery ribs, with leaves
4 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

Steps:

  • In a large pitcher, combine the vegetable cocktail, celery seed, pepper, citrus juices, 2 Tbs grated horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and hot pepper sauce and stir well to combine.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Fill 4 glasses with ice.
  • Add 2 oz vodka to each and fill three-quarters full with the vegetable cocktail mix.
  • Sprinkle with the remaining horseradish, place 1 celery stalk in each glass, and squeeze a lime wedge over each glass before dropping the wedge into the glass.
  • Float a tsp of balsamic vinegar on the top of each drink and serve.

  • In a small saucepan, simmer the balsamic vinegar over medium-low heat until it has reduced to 1/4 cup, about 5 minutes.
  • In a large pitcher, combine 2 tablespoons of the reduced balsamic vinegar, tomato juice, lime juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, and hot sauce.
  • Place the chopped celery stalks in a food processor and pulse until coarsely ground. Add about 1 cup of the tomato mixture and process until pureed. Pour the celery mixture back into the pitcher with the rest of the tomato juice mixture.
  • To make each drink, fill a glass with ice. Add 1/4 cup of vodka and top with the bloody mary mix. Drizzle with a little of the remaining balsamic vinegar. Garnish with a lime wedge, celery stalk, and olives.
