Categories     Cocktail

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 14

32 ounces (4 cups) tomato juice
8 ounces (1 cup) vodka
1 medium-to-large cucumber, peeled and seeded
1/3 cup distilled vinegar
1 teaspoon celery seed (not celery salt!)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce*
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (I used Tapatío), more to taste
1 teaspoon (about 50 twists) freshly ground black pepper
2 medium cloves garlic, pressed or minced
1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
Lemon or lime wedges
Kosher salt, for the rims of your glasses, optional (add chili powder if you'd like)
Lots of ice, for serving
Garnishes (choose any): Celery stalks, skinny carrots with leafy tops, mini bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, dill pickle spears, pickled okra, and/or green cocktail olives

Steps:

  • In a blender, combine the tomato juice, vodka, cucumber, vinegar, celery seed, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce. Securely fasten the lid and blend on high speed until completely smooth.
  • Taste, and add more hot sauce for more heat (it's going to taste quite intense now, since the mix hasn't cooled over ice yet). Add the black pepper and garlic. Securely fasten the lid and blend for just a few seconds (or longer, for a completely smooth texture). Taste, and stir in 1/4 teaspoon salt for more overall flavor if you'd like (tomato juice brands vary by salt content, so this is really up to you). Set aside.
  • If you'd like to rim your glasses with salt, run a lemon or lime wedge around the outside rim. Pour kosher salt onto a small plate (mix in chili powder if you'd like), and roll the wet edge of the glass across the salt at a 45-degree angle. Repeat with the remaining glasses.
  • Fill the glasses with ice, and pour the Bloody Mary mix on top. Stir with a spoon, and garnish with a lemon or lime wedge and garnishes of your choice. Serve immediately.

BLOODY MARY

Bloody Mary image

This vodka cocktail has endless variations. You can add chilli, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, herbs... even bacon. It's up to you!

Provided by Jamie Oliver

Categories     Cocktails     Drinks tube     Vodka     Christmas     Father's day     St. George's Day     Party drinks

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 parts Grey Goose vodka
4 parts organic tomato juice
½ part of lemon juice, (to taste)
4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
4 dashes of Tabasco, (or hot pepper sauce)
1 pinch of fleur de sel (or sea salt)
1 pinch of black pepper
1 stick of celery
1 bunch of aromatic herbs
ice, cubed

Steps:

  • 1. Add plenty of ice and all of your ingredients to a shaker or stirring glass
  • 2. If you're using a shaker, tilt it backwards and forwards a few times to mix the ingredients without making the drink frothy. If you're stirring, you can do so vigorously 3. Pour the mix into a glass. Top up with fresh ice if it's not quite full 4. Add your garnishes. Any fresh herbs and a celery stick work well 5. Tabasco tip: if you're making Bloody Marys for a group of people, make a jug without spice and let people add their own Tabasco. Some like it hot, others not so much!

BLOODY MARY

Bloody Mary image

This humble Bloody Mary has its roots in a 2000 article by R. W. Apple Jr., who explored the origins of Worcestershire sauce, "perhaps best known as an indispensable ingredient" in the cocktail. Mr. Apple's version doesn't stray far from tradition, featuring the sauce prominently. Serve this version with a simple garnish of lime at your next brunch. (Betsey, Mr. Apple's wife, noted in the comments below that she always added horseradish and celery salt to those she served him at home. We think that's a grand idea.)

Provided by Sonja Overhiser

Categories     Drink

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (vegan as desired)
2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco hot sauce
