Little hands aged from 3-6 can help make these sweet treats, best served with vanilla ice cream

Provided by Good Food team

Categories     Dessert, Dinner

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 eating apples (grown-up helpers: please score around the circumference of each with a small, sharp knife)
handful of sultanas
2 tbsp light muscovado sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
matchbox-size piece of butter
2 tsp demerara sugar

Steps:

  • Ask a grown-up to turn the oven on to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6. Sit each apple on the worktop and push the apple corer into the centre of each one (or ask a grown-up to do this for you).
  • Mix the sultanas, muscovado sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl.
  • Stand up the apples, side by side, in a baking dish. Using your fingers, push a little bit of the sultana mixture into each apple, using up all the mixture between them.
  • Add a blob of butter to the top of each and sprinkle over the demerara sugar. Ask a grown-up to put the dish in the oven for 20 mins or until the apples are cooked through.

BEST BAKED APPLES

Best Baked Apples image

This recipe from Cook's Illustrated takes a little more work than regular baked apples, but the effort is well worth it. The result is a crisp, flavorful apple.

Provided by strawberrybird

Categories     < 4 Hours

Time 1h20m

Yield 6 apples, 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

7 granny smith apples
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup dried cranberries, coarsely chopped
1/3 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons rolled oats
1 teaspoon orange zest
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup apple cider
2 tablespoons apple cider

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Peel, core, and cut 1 apple into 1/4-inch dice.
  • Combine 5 tbsp butter, brown sugar, cranberries, pecans, orange zest, oats, cinnamon, and diced apple in a large bowl; set aside.
  • Shave a thin slice off the bottom of the remaining six apples so they sit flat. Cut top 1/2 inch off stem end of apples and reserve. Peel apples and use a melon baller or small measuring spoon to remove 1 2/-inch diameter core, being careful not to cut through the bottom of the apple.
  • Melt remaining butter in 12-inch ovensafe skillet over medium heat. Once foaming subsides, add apples, stem-side down, and cook until cut surface is golden brown, about 3 minutes.
  • Flip apples, reduce heat to low, and spoon filling inside, mounding excess filling over cavities; top with reserved apple caps.
  • Add maple syrup and 1/3 cup cider to skillet. Transfer skillet to oven, and bake 35-40 minutes, or until skewer inserted into apple meets little resistance. Baste even 10 minutes with maple syrup mixture in skillet.
  • Transfer apples to serving platter. Stir up to 2 tbsp remaining cider into sauce to adjust consistency. Pour sauce over apples and serve.

BAKED APPLES

Baked Apples image

This recipe is for whole baked apples stuffed with buttery brown sugar oat crumble. For extra flavor, feel free to swap the water with warm apple cider.

Provided by Sally

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 Tablespoons (43g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature (extra soft, so it's easy to mash)
1/4 cup (50g) packed light or dark brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 cup (20g) old-fashioned whole rolled oats
4 large apples (see note), rinsed and patted dry
optional: 2 Tablespoons raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped nuts
3/4 cup (180ml) warm water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (191°C).
  • Using a handheld or stand mixer with a paddle attachment, or simply using a fork or spoon, beat/mash the butter, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together until combined. Stir in the oats, then the raisins/dried cranberries/nuts, if using. Set aside.
  • This can be tricky, but I recommend using a sharp paring knife and a spoon. (Or an apple corer.) I find cookie scoops can easily break or crack the apples. Using a sharp paring knife, cut around the core, about halfway or 3/4 down into the apple. Use a spoon to carefully dig out the core. Takes a bit of patience and arm muscle. Once the core is out, use a spoon to dig out any more seeds.
  • Place cored apples in an 8-inch or 9-inch baking pan, cake pan, or pie dish. Spoon filling into each apple, filling all the way to the top. Pour warm water into the pan around the apples. The water helps prevent the apples from drying out and burning.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until apples appear slightly soft. Bake longer for softer, mushier baked apples. The time depends on how firm your apples were and how soft you want them to be.
  • Remove apples from the oven and, if desired, baste the outside of the apples with juices from the pan. This adds a little moisture to the skin, but it's completely optional.
  • Serve warm with salted caramel, whipped cream, or ice cream. Cover and store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

  • Place almonds onto a baking sheet and toast in the oven while it is heating until they become fragrant. Remove almonds and chop into small pieces. Place almonds into a small bowl. Wash the apples well. Take a sharp knife and cut the stem out of the apple. Then use a melon baller to scope out the cavity of the apple. Remove a 1 1/2 inch core out of the apple, but do not cut through the apple completely.
  • You may want to level the apple by checking to see if it will sit upright on its own. If it does not, trim enough off the bottom of the apple so it will sit upright.
  • Prepare the filling by tossing together the chopped almonds, ground cinnamon, honey, salt, and vanilla extract. Add 2 tablespoons of melted butter to the filling. Place filling into the apples. Place about 1 teaspoon pat of butter on the top of each apple. Place boiling water and 2 tablespoons of butter into a 13 x 9 inch baking dish.
