BEER BATTERED HALLOUMI

Number Of Ingredients 6

50 g plain flour ((~ 1/4 cup))
75 ml beer ((~ 1/3 cup))
Salt
Black pepper
Oil for frying
225 g halloumi cheese ((8 x 1cm slices))

Steps:

  • Add the flour and beer to a large bowl, and season generously. Whisk until smooth.
  • Heat a couple of centimetres of oil in a deep pan. When it's at the point that it sizzles when you drip a tiny amount of batter into the oil, it's ready to use.
  • Dip the halloumi slices into the beer batter until thoroughly coated, and carefully drop each piece into the oil. Cook for a few minutes each side, until golden brown. Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper for a minute or two to drain off any excess oil, then serve, with more salt and pepper if desired.

½ block halloumi, sliced into 4 pieces
60g plain flour
30ml water
30ml milk
1 tsp baking powder
salt and pepper
Oil for deep frying

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a large pan or deep fat fryer if you have one
  • Whisk together the flour, milk, water and baking powder and season with salt and pepper
  • Check the oil is hot enough by dropping in a bit of batter. If it floats and sizzles, the oil is hot enough
  • Dredge the halloumi in the batter and fry for 5-10 minutes, until golden, turning over a few times
