Lettuce Boats With Bleu Cheese and Bacon image

This is the most simple yet elegant and fanciful way to serve a salad, no chopping or tearing the leaves, and it just looks so cool plated up. It's really fun to see folks 'WOW' the looks of such a simple salad. This one never goes unnoticed.

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch cubes (use scissors for easy cutting)
1 garlic clove, minced
8 ounces ranch dressing
2 ounces blue cheese, crumbled
1 head iceberg lettuce, cut into 4 wedges, and yellow centers removed
1 cup crouton
1 green onion, chopped

Steps:

  • Cook bacon and garlic in skillet until crisp. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels.
  • Place lettuce wedges upside down (like a boat) onto individual serving plates. Drizzle each lettuce wedge crossways (across the sides of the boats) and around the plate with dressing.
  • Sprinkle the fresh bleu cheese over top. Sprinkle bacon on and around the boat then top with green onion.

6 oz thinly sliced cooked roast beef (from deli), cut into 1/2-inch strips
2 medium carrots, thinly sliced (1 cup)
1 cup cauliflower florets
1/4 cup sliced radishes
1/2 cup diced Colby-Monterey Jack cheese blend (2 oz)
1/2 cup zesty Italian dressing
1 small head iceberg lettuce

Steps:

  • In large bowl, place beef, carrots, cauliflower, radishes and cheese. Add dressing; toss to coat. Let stand 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, cut lettuce into 4 wedges for lettuce "boats." Remove a few pieces of lettuce from inside boats. Place boats on 4 plates. Spoon beef mixture onto lettuce boats.

  • Place the steak in the freezer for about 10 minutes to firm it up (this can be done while you make the sauce). When the steak is very cold, slice it thinly into about 4-inch pieces; almost as if you are shaving the meat with your knife. Place the steak strips in a shallow bowl and pour the marinade over the meat. Toss with tongs to evenly coat the steak.
  • Let the steak marinate at room temperature for about 20 minutes while you prepare the rest of the ingredients; veggies, lettuce, and any other toppings you'd like.
  • When the steak has marinated a bit, preheat a cast iron skillet (or any heavy skill you like) to medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. When the oil is very hot, add some of the steak in one layer to the skillet. Don't disturb the meat for 90 seconds, then flip the steak and let it continue cooking until both sides are very browned. Continue with the rest of the meat, this may take 3 batches or so depending on the size of your skillet.
