BASIC CHICKEN SOUP
Everyone has their own favorite chicken soup recipe, but rarely have so few ingredients added up to so much comfort. This version has classic flavors and, thanks to a simplified method, cooks more quickly than traditional chicken soups (the dish is ready in a little over an hour). There's no need to make a separate stock; the vegetables and meat form their own satisfying broth.

- Ensure that your kitchen workspace is clean and set up with all of your tools, ingredients, and equipment. Please also prepare yourself by wearing long sleeves, closed-toe shoes, goggles, and plastic gloves. Soap making is fun but also chemistry so you need to work safely. I'd also advise that you make soap when smaller children aren't around put pets in a closed room somewhere. It's best to work undistracted, and you want to keep them safe.
- Put on your goggles and gloves, and make the lye solution. You should do this in a well-ventilated area and try not to breathe in the steam. I like to work outisde for this step or next to an open window. Measure the sodium hydroxide (lye) into a container and the distilled water into a heat-proof jug.
- Though you can melt the solid oils in the slow cooker, it takes a long time. To speed things up, place the pan of solid oils on the hob and turn it on to the lowest heat setting. They will melt quicker than you expect, so stay with the pan, moving the oil around in the pan to help speed up melting. When there are a few small pieces of solid oil still floating, take the pan off the heat and set it on a potholder. They'll melt with the residual heat and some gentle stirring with your spoon/spatula.
- Next, pour the liquid oils into the slow cooker with the melted oils. Use the spatula to get every last drop out of the jug then stir the oils together gently.

- Choose a recipe and fragrance. If you are a beginner, the simplest way to start is to purchase a soap base — a pre-mixed combination of the soap, glycerin, and a few add-ins like plant butters and extracts for skin benefits, along with additives for transparency or fillers for making opaque bars.
- Gather your tools. All you really need is: A heat-safe container to melt the base — Depending on the size of the soap you are making, even a 1- or 2-quart Pyrex measuring cup works well.
- Melt the base. Most ready-made melt and pour recipes can be done either in the microwave or on a stove top in a double boiler over low heat. Both techniques work well, but doing it on the stove top can give you more control and allows you to better see when the base starts melting.
- Mix in the fragrance. If you are not following an exact recipe, it might take a little trial and error to figure out how much fragrance to add to your soap.
- Fill the mold. Carefully — but quickly — pour the molten base and fragrance mixture into your mold. Pro tip: Fill the molds as close to the top as possible.
- Cool and unmold it. Let your soap-filled mold cool at room temperature on a flat surface. Avoid touching or disturbing it until it is fully solidified.

- Prepare your workstation with your tools and equipment. Put on rubber gloves, eye protection, and an apron. Carefully pre-measure the ingredients. The oils in the slow cooker, the water in a heat-proof jug, and the lye (KOH) in another container.
- You now need to know if the soap is actually complete and if it's lye-heavy or not. Let's begin by seeing if there's unsaponified oil in the soap.Gently stir a teaspoon of soap paste into half a cup of scalding hot distilled water. Let it sit and dissolve, giving it another stir if it needs help breaking up. Let it cool completely then have a look. If there's oil on the surface, or if the liquid is milky and opaque then you still have unsaponified oils in the paste. Continue cooking it until it's much clearer. Just to be clear, milky means you can't see through it at all. If your liquid is translucent then you're good to go.
- Once you've tested the paste, you can now dilute part or all of it. If you dilute the full amount, then you'll have more soap than you'll probably be able to use in a month. In that case, you will need to add a suitable broad-spectrum preservative. Alternatively, keep the soap paste stored in a jar and dilute part of it at a time. The soap paste does not need a preservative and has a shelf-life of up to two years. The shelf-life will be the closest best-by date of the ingredients you use (check your bottles). You can also use the soap paste on its own without diluting it.
