After the wet dog food scare recently I have started cooking for my big lab. I got this recipe from Food Network. This recipe reflects my changes. The original was on one of Bobby Flay's shows. I mix these in with my dogs dry food (Innova Large Breed) and he gobbles it up (he gets 2-4 patties a day; 1-2 at each meal). :)I hope your furry friend loves it as much as mine.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup brown rice, cooked (you can use long-grain as well)
1 cup oatmeal (I use cooked oatmeal but dry oats work too)
2 garlic cloves, pressed (optional)
1 cup cooked mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, green beans, lima beans, zucchini, etc.)
1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground turkey or 1 lb ground pork
2 -3 eggs (keep the shells, pulverize them with a mortar and pestle, if you have one or just crush them up)

Steps:

  • Cook rice in chicken stock or water, covered over a low flame until done, about 20-25 minutes.
  • Process blanched/cooked veggies in food processor until the bits are about the same size as the rice. This will help your pet absorb the nutrients. Mix with 2 eggs. Fold into rice mixture. Add ground meat and form into balls. If balls aren't holding together well, add the third egg and mix again.
  • Form into round patties and grill, bake or broil until done. I use a large size scoop to make the patties equal size so they cook evenly.
  • I refrigerate enough for 3 days worth of meals and then I pack away the rest in the freezer in one day servings and pull out what I'll need the night before to thaw.
  • This can also be cooked in a loaf pan, sort of a meatloaf for your pup at 350º for 50-55 minutes or until an internal meat thermometer reaches 160º.

There are plenty of fancy recipes for hamburgers, but as most of you know.. the best burgers are those ones that you get at the neighborhood bar. Whats the secret? The big secret is that there is no secret! The grill cook is just trying to fill the order as quickly as possible with no special effort. The simplicity is what makes bar burgers taste so good. One of the keys is to buy meat labeled hamburger.. no lean ground meat for these. Look for the packages with the grind marks visible.. These are the best!!

2 lbs hamburger
6 hamburger buns
2 tablespoons butter
kosher salt
pepper

Steps:

  • Heat griddle or cast iron pan on medium high heat.
  • Without disturbing grind marks, carefully divide hamburger into 6 sections.
  • Place hamburger sections on hot griddle.
  • Press hamburgers down onto griddle with a heavy spatula. Use pressure. this causes the hamburgers to stick to the griddle and prevents shrinkage.
  • Sprinkle tops with salt and pepper and any other spices you may want to use.
  • When the edges look cooked and juices rise to the top, turn over but dont press down again.
  • When bottoms are browned, and burger is to desired doneness, remove from griddle and set aside.
  • Cover with foil or wax paper.
  • Spread cut sides of buns lightly with butter.
  • Place butter side down on griddle until lightly browned.
  • Place burgers on buns and top with your favorite toppings.

1 cup hulled barley
4 cups water
6 ounces tomato paste
2 carrots, grated
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Bring the water to a boil in a medium sized pot. Add barley, reduce heat to medium, and cook covered fifty minutes until barley is tender. Drain any excess liquid.
  • Mix cooked barley with remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Form seven burgers with your hands and cook in an oiled large frying pan over med-high heat for ten mins on each side. Serve warm with lettuce on a bun.
