CEDAR PLANK OVEN SALMON

Cedar Plank Oven Salmon image

Can you put cedar planks in the oven to cook salmon? Yes, you can! This cedar plank oven salmon recipe is delicious and easy to make.

Provided by Katie Moseman

Categories     Main Course

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 tablespoons salt (for the brine)
1 pound salmon fillets
Fire & Flavor Salmon Rub (see note)
1 tablespoon melted butter (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped dill (optional)
1 Fire & Flavor Cedar Grilling Plank

Steps:

  • Soak the cedar plank in water for 1 hour. When it's almost done soaking, begin preheating the oven to 350 F.
  • While the oven is preheating, make a brine for the salmon by combining 2 cups of water with 2 tablespoons of salt. Soak the salmon in the brine for 10 minutes while the oven preheats.
  • Remove the cedar plank from the water and shake off excess water. Remove the salmon from the brine and gently pat to remove excess brine. Rub the salmon with the desired amount of salmon rub.
  • Place a flat rack on a baking sheet (you can line the baking sheet with foil first, for easy cleanup, if desired). Place the soaked plank on the rack. Put the baking sheet with the rack and plank on it in the oven for 5 minutes to heat up.
  • Remove the baking sheet with the rack and plank on it. Place the rubbed salmon on the hot plank; if the end of a salmon filet is thinner than the center, you can gently fold the thin end under so that the salmon cooks more evenly. Return the baking sheet to the oven. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until desired doneness is reached. (Salmon is fully cooked when it flakes easily with a fork.)
  • Optional: glaze salmon fillets with melted butter and sprinkle on chopped fresh dill just before serving.

CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Cedar Plank Salmon image

Cooking salmon over indirect heat on the grill brings smoky flavor to Bobby Flay's recipe for Cedar Plank Salmon from BBQ with Bobby Flay on Food Network.

Provided by Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Time 2h45m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cedar plank (6 by 14 inches)
2 salmon fillets (1 1/2 pounds total)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 tablespoons Dijon mustard
6 tablespoons brown sugar

Steps:

  • Soak cedar plank in salted water for 2 hours, then drain. Remove skin from salmon fillet. Remove any remaining bones. Rinse the salmon under cold running water and pat dry with paper towels. Generously season the salmon with salt and pepper on both sides. Lay the salmon (on what was skin-side down) on the cedar plank and carefully spread the mustard over the top and sides. Place the brown sugar in a bowl and crumble between your fingers, then sprinkle over the mustard.
  • Set grill for indirect grilling and heat to medium-high. Place the cedar plank in the center of the hot grate, away from the heat. Cover the grill and cook until cooked through, around 20 to 30 minutes. The internal temperature should read 135 degrees F. Transfer the salmon and plank to a platter and serve right off the plank.
  • Cook's Note: A direct method to grill the salmon may be used. Soak the cedar plank well. Spread the mustard and brown sugar on the salmon, but do not place the fish on the plank. Set up the grill for direct grilling on medium-high. When ready to cook, place the plank on the hot grate and leave it until there is a smell of smoke, about 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the plank over and place the fish on top. Cover the grill and cook until the fish is cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 135 degrees F. Check the plank occasionally. If the edges start to catch fire, mist with water, or move the plank to a cooler part of the grill.

CEDAR-PLANK SALMON

Cedar-Plank Salmon image

Where this recipe calls for lemon zest and rosemary, the native Coast Salish Indians on Vancouver Island would use grand-fir needles. Either way, the salmon takes on a light, smoky woodiness from grilling on a cedar plank, for a lovely pairing of earth and ocean.

Yield Makes 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 tablespoons grainy mustard
2 tablespoons mild honey or pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon minced rosemary
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
1 (2-pounds) salmon fillet with skin (1 1/2 inches thick)
Equipment: a cedar grilling plank (about 15 by 6 inches)

Steps:

  • Soak cedar grilling plank in water to cover 2 hours, keeping it immersed.
  • Prepare grill for direct-heat cooking over medium-hot charcoal (medium-high heat for gas); see Grilling Procedure . Open vents on bottom and lid of charcoal grill.
  • Stir together mustard, honey, rosemary, zest, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Spread mixture on flesh side of salmon and let stand at room temperature 15 minutes.
  • Put salmon on plank, skin side down (if salmon is too wide for plank, fold in thinner side to fit). Grill, covered with lid, until salmon is just cooked through and edges are browned, 13 to 15 minutes. Let salmon stand on plank 5 minutes before serving.

GRILLED CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon image

Using a cedar plank to grill salmon is an effortless way to add enormous flavor to your dish. The fish takes on a lovely smokiness, stays wonderfully moist and the skin doesn't stick to the grates. We spiced ours up with a maple-ginger marinade and whipped up a quick side salad for a tasty, incredibly easy weeknight meal.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 1h30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons grated ginger (from a 2-inch knob)
3 cloves garlic, grated
1/2 cup olive oil
Four 6-ounce salmon fillets, skin on (about 1 1/2 pounds)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
One 10-ounce bag coleslaw mix
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup sesame sticks or wonton chips

Steps:

  • Soak a cedar grill plank in water for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours. Preheat the grill to medium.
  • Mix the rice wine vinegar, maple syrup, soy sauce, ginger and garlic in a medium bowl. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil, whisking constantly, until emulsified. Reserve 1/4 cup for the salad dressing and set aside. Pour the remaining mixture over the salmon and let marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, place the soaked cedar plank in the center of the preheated grill. Close the lid and let the plank heat until you hear it start to crack, about 15 minutes. Place the salmon fillets, skin-side down, on the plank. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper. Close the lid and cook until the salmon is opaque throughout and large flakes break off when flecked with a fork, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the plank from the grill and serve the salmon from the plank (the fish will slide right off with a metal spatula, leaving the skin behind). Discard the plank.
  • While the salmon is cooking, add the coleslaw mix, almonds, sesame sticks or wonton chips and the reserved dressing to a large bowl and toss until well combined. Serve alongside the salmon.

BAKED (OR GRILLED) CEDAR-PLANK SALMON (REAL SIMPLE)

Baked (Or Grilled) Cedar-Plank Salmon (Real Simple) image

This recipe is a (very) slightly adapted version of a recipe from Real Simple magazine, Jan. 2009. It was voted No. 9 in a list of readers 50 favorite recipes! It is delicious and SO easy! Buy your salmon fillets fresh (with skin) and you won't get that fishy smell at all! I baked the salmon when I made this recipe, but I have also included instructions for grilling outdoors. The cedar plank adds a wonderful, smoky flavor. It should be 7 x 14 x 1/3 inches. I found cedar planks in the meat department of my local grocery store. You must soak the cedar plank in water for no less than 30 minutes before use. Prep time includes soaking time.

LEMON HERB CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Lemon Herb Cedar Plank Salmon image

Juicy, buttery cedar plank salmon is a very simple dinner but has a lot of delicious flavor. This salmon recipe features simple ingredients like herbs, butter, and lemon that compliment the natural salmon flavor perfectly.

Provided by Lyuba

Categories     Main Course

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cedar plank (or other wood plank)
1 lb skin on salmon fillets
1 tbsp canola oil (to rub the skin)
2 tbsp butter
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp fresh minced parsley
1 tbsp fresh minced dill weed
salt
black pepper

Steps:

  • Soak the wood plank! Fill a dish that is bigger than the plank, like a casserole pan or an aluminum baking pan, with water and then place the wooden plank into it. The plank will float so you want to put something heavy on top and make sure the plank is submerged under water. Soak it for 1-2 hours.
  • Slice lemon and cold butter into several slices.
  • Rub bottom of the salmon skin with some oil.
  • Season salmon with salt and pepper on all sides and sprinkle herbs over the top and sides evenly.
  • Place a couple of slices of butter on top of each salmon and a couple slices of slices of lemon over butter. Set it aside until ready to put on the plank to grill.
  • Preheat the grill to medium heat with a two-zone fire just in case. Place soaked wood planks on the grill and heat it up for about 5 minutes. Flip the plank and place salmon on it, skin down.
  • Close the lid and cook salmon until it's done. I prefer to cook it until it reaches 135° in the thickest part. (USDA recommends salmon safe temperature to be 145° but some people feel that it is overdone.)Depending on the thickness of salmon piece, that could take from 12-20 minutes.(A whole salmon filet that is thick could take well over 20 minutes. You will have to check the temperature with an instant read thermometer.)

HOW TO GRILL SALMON ON A CEDAR PLANK | BETTER HOMES & GARDENS

From bhg.com
  • Choose a Grilling Plank. Purchase a plank (or a few) from a specialty cookware store, hardware store, grilling supply outlet, or online. Cedar (like that found in the Wildwood Grilling Cedar Planks, $17.99 for two, Bed Bath & Beyond) lends the most intense, aromatic flavor to salmon, but other woods are excellent for plank-grilling, too.
  • Prepare the Plank. Plank-grilled salmon scores extra flavor from smoke with the convenience of a grill. (Learn how to turn your grill into a smoker for any outdoor cooking adventures you have ahead.)
  • Prepare the Salmon. Leave the salmon filet whole, cut it into serving-size portions, or use individual salmon steaks—there’s no wrong option when grilling salmon on a plank.
  • Prepare the Grill for Direct Grilling. This step will vary a bit depending on whether your grill cooks with charcoal or gas. For a Charcoal Grill.
  • Grill the Cedar Plank Salmon. Place the plank on the grill rack and allow it to preheat about 5 minutes or until it begins to crackle and smoke.
