Small half-circle doughy dessert with apple-cinnamon filling. You can fill these with anything if you don't like apple. This is a good base recipe that can be altered any way you like! My family loves these!

1 cup butter
6 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 cups all-purpose flour
4 small apples - peeled, cored, and cut into small cubes
½ cup white sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch salt

Steps:

  • Mix butter and cream cheese together in a bowl. Stir in flour until dough comes together and forms into a ball. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate 8 hours to overnight.
  • Combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cover; cook, stirring frequently, until apples are the consistency of chunky applesauce, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.
  • Remove dough from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Divide dough into 10 pieces and roll into balls. Roll out each ball into a 3- to 4-inch circle with a rolling pin. Fill one side of the circle with apple filling. Moisten edges lightly with water. Fold dough over the filling and press edges together to seal.
  • Arrange empanadas on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until dough is golden, about 15 minutes.

Here, tart granny smith apples are the fruit of choice, and are spiked with cinnamon and cloves before getting stuffed into the dough and baked. For an authentic Mexican experience, serve these little treats for breakfast or dessert with coffee or hot chocolate.

6 granny smith apples, cored, peeled and cut into ½" pieces (about 6 cups)
1 cup chopped brown sugar cane from 1pkg. (8 oz.) GOYA® Brown Sugar Cane - Piloncillo, or 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 tbsp. GOYA® Lemon Juice
1¼ tsp. GOYA® Ground Cinnamon, divided
¼ tsp. ground cloves
2 tbsp. sugar
1 pkg. (11.6 oz.) GOYA® Empanada Dough-Puff Pastry for Baking, thawed
All-purpose flour, for rolling out dough
1 egg, mixed with 2 tsp. water and beaten

Steps:

  • Step 1 Add apples, brown sugar cane, lemon juice, 1 tsp. ground cinnamon and ground cloves to small pot; set pot over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves and apples begin to release their liquid. Reduce heat to medium low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid evaporates and apples are tender, about 20-25 minutes. Transfer cooked apples to bowl; chill until cold. (Note: Filling can be stored covered in refrigerator for up to 1 week.) Step 2 Heat oven to 425°F. In small bowl, mix sugar with remaining cinnamon until combined; set aside. Step 3 On lightly floured work surface, using rolling pin, roll out puff pastry round until about ½" larger in diameter. Spoon 2 tbsp. cooled apple mixture into middle of dough. Moisten edges with beaten eggs; fold in half to form half-moon shape. Seal edges by pressing with fork; transfer to parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining pastry rounds and filling to make 12 empanadas. Brush tops of empanadas with beaten eggs; sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Using tip of knife, make small slit in top of each empanada to vent. Step 4 Bake until empanadas are puffed and golden brown, about 20 minutes, rotating pan after 10 minutes for even browning. Transfer empanadas to cooling rack; let sit until cool enough to handle. Serve warm or at room temperature.

1 tablespoon Cinnamon Powder (Dalchini)
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg powder , freshly ground
2 tablespoon Brown Sugar (Demerara Sugar)
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Puff Pastry Sheet
All Purpose Flour (Maida) , for dusting
Caster Sugar , for dusting

Steps:

  • To begin making Apple Empanadas Recipe, use a sharp knife to core and thinly slice the apples into wedges.
  • Toss the apple slices into a medium skillet and add cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and brown sugar.
  • Sauté on a medium heat for 5 minutes, or until the apples have softened a little bit. Keep them aside.
  • Lightly flour a surface and roll out pastry dough to 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) thick.
  • Cut into circles for making empanadas and place filling in the center of the dough circle for empanadas.
  • Fold dough over to make a filled half circle and use a fork to press the edges together. Refrigerate uncooked empanadas for 3 hours.
  • Deep fry in oil 6 to7 minutes until golden brown. And drain the excess oil using several layers of absorbent paper before serving. Dust it with some powdered sugar and enjoy.
  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Once the uncooked empanadas are refrigerated for 3 hours, take them out and arrange it on a baking sheet lined with a parchment paper. Brush each of the empanadas with some milk.
  • Put the tray in oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden. Keep a close watch while the empanadas are baked in oven since the temperature and its distribution varies with ovens.
