A&W WHISTLE DOG
I worked at A&W in the Montreal area during my college years and, by far, these were the best "non-steamie" hot dog around! Easy to make and so tasty. In the '70s we used Canadian back bacon - nowadays, they use regular bacon - both taste great. Ohhhhh, the memories :-)

WHISTLE DOGS
My version of a Canadian classic from A&W. Recipe is for one hotdog, multiply by how many you need.

Steps:
- Fry the bacon and drain on paper towels.
- Grill the wiener split side down for a minute or two, while toasting the bun on the high rack of the grill, open face down.
- When they are done immediately add the cheese to the bun so the cheese melts.
- Relish and onion the other side of the bun, add on the dog and bacon and enjoy.
- Ketchup lovers, go right ahead.

- Slice your hot dogs horizontally, but do not cut all the way through. (They're basically butterflied). Open the hot dogs and lay them cut side down in a pan over medium heat. Flip and fry both sides until cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Wipe any grease out of the pan and toast the open hot dog buns until golden. Remove these and add the hot dogs back to the pan and top each with a slice of cheese and a slice of bacon. Cover with a lid and let the steam heat the bacon and melt the cheese.
- Once the cheese is melted and the bacon reheated, remove each hot dog and place on top of the toasted buns. Top with relish and mustard or any other condiment you desire. Serve hot

- Bake the bacon in the oven for 12 minutes, turn and continue to cook for another 5-8 minutes. Careful, it will turn from cooked to overdone very quickly. Remove and set aside.
- While the bacon is cooking heat your grill to medium-hot and grill the hot dogs on both sides until nice grill marks appear.

- Wrap one slice of bacon around each wiener and cook in a skillet over medium-high heat until bacon is crispy.
- Meanwhile, warm the buns. (I heat mine up on the grill or in the microwave but these can be warmed in the oven also)
