The Perfect Margarita image

Mastering the margarita requires a certain amount of practice, but once you dial-in your perfect ratio, it's a really easy cocktail to replicate. The classic recipe is 3 parts tequila, 2 parts triple sec, and 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice, and you should probably start off pretty close to that, but my personal favorite proportions are 4-3-2.

1 lime wedge
1 pinch coarse sea salt to taste
1 large ice cube
ice
2 fluid ounces white tequila
1 ½ fluid ounces triple sec
1 fluid ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
1 slice lime

Steps:

  • Moisten the rim of a glass with a lime wedge. Sprinkle salt onto a plate. Lightly dip the moistened rim into the salt. Place a large ice cube in the glass and freeze the prepared glass until ready to serve.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with fresh ice. Add tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Cover and shake vigorously until outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into the prepared glass and garnish with a slice of lime.

  • Rub the rim of 4 rocks glasses with lime; dip in coarse salt. Fill three-quarters of the way with ice. Combine 1 cup tequila, 2/3 cup fresh lime juice, 1/3 cup orange-flavored liqueur and 2 teaspoons superfine sugar in a cocktail shaker. Shake well, then pour into the glasses. Garnish with lime.

1 lime, halved
Kosher salt
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (5 limes)
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (1 lemon)
1 cup Triple Sec
1 cup white tequila
2 cups ice, plus extra for serving

Steps:

  • If you like margaritas served in a glass with salt, rub the outside rims of 6glasses with a cut lime and dip each glass lightly into a plate of kosher salt.
  • Combine the lime juice, lemon juice, Triple Sec, tequila, and ice in a blender and puree. Place extra ice in a cocktail shaker. Fill with margarita mix, shake well, and strain into glasses.

AUTHENTIC MARGARITA MIX

Reportedly the origional "authentic" Margarita mix, from scratch, and easy too! This came from Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico) and was named after the inventers daughter.

2 limes, juice of
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup simple syrup (recipe follows)
1 1/2 cups ice, crushed

Steps:

  • Place ingredients in blender and blend well.
  • For an authentic Magarita, mix three parts mix, 1 part tequila and 1/2 part Cointreau or Triple Sec and serve in a glass with salted rim. (To salt the rim, wipe rim of glass with lime skin and dip upside down in a plate of salt.
  • To make bartenders simple syrup, used in bars since it won't cloud or settle in your drink, take 1 cup water, 2 cups sugar and simmer or Nuke (microwave) until the sugar is dissolved, cool to room temperature Keep on hand.

This is the signature drink at my in-law's home. My father-in-law developed a taste for margaritas made from scratch during the summer they spent in Zihuatanejo during the 1960s. After decades of tinkering he has arrived at this foolproof recipe for the ultimate Mexican cocktail.

3 fluid ounces fresh lime juice
1 fluid ounce sweetened lime juice
3 fluid ounces triple sec (orange-flavored liqueur)
ice cubes
1 lime, cut into wedges
rimming salt

Steps:

  • Measure the tequila, lime juice, sweetened lime juice and triple sec into a cocktail shaker and add a generous scoop of ice. Cover and shake until the shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds.
  • Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a margarita glass and dip in salt. Fill each glass with ice. Strain equal amounts of the cocktail into the glasses to serve. Garnish with a lime wedge.

1-1/2 ounces blanco tequila
1 ounce Triple Sec
1/2 ounce freshly-squeezed lime juice

Steps:

  • Moisten rim of 1 cocktail glass with lime wedge. If desired, sprinkle salt on a plate; dip rim in salt. Fill glass with ice. In an empty cocktail shaker, combine tequila, Triple Sec and lime juice. Fill with ice; cover and shake until frost forms on the outside of the shaker, 15-20 seconds. Strain into prepared glass. 50ml tequila reposado
25ml lime juice
20ml triple sec (we used Cointreau)
salt
2 lime wedges

Steps:

  • Sprinkle a few teaspoons of salt over the surface of a small plate or saucer. Rub one wedge of lime along the rim of a tumbler and then dip it into the salt so that the entire rim is covered.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add the tequila, lime juice and triple sec. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
  • Strain the mix into the prepared glass over fresh ice. Serve with a wedge of lime.
