Perfectly flaky pastry wraps juicy tart apples with an amazing cinnamon sugar syrup making my Great Aunt Ina's Apple Dumplings the ultimate dessert. So comforting and delicious!

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2/3 cup all-vegetable shortening
5-7 tablespoons cold water
2 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
6-8 medium sized tart apples
1/2 cup sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
6-8 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Pastry: In a large mixing bowl, sift flour and salt together. Cut in shortening with a pastry cutter or two knives in opposite directions until pieces are the size of small peas. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of water over mixture and gently toss with a fork. Repeat with more water until mixture is all moistened. Form into a ball. Flatten pastry dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll out to a little less than 1/8-inch thick and cut into 7-inch squares.
  • Syrup: Prepare the syrup by bringing 2 cups water, 1 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons butter and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Reduce to medium-low heat and let simmer until reduced to a thick enough syrup to lightly coat the back of a spoon.
  • Preheat oven to 425°F. Butter a large rimmed baking dish and set aside.
  • Apples: Peel and core an apple for each pastry square you have. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar and 1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon.
  • Place an apple in the middle of one of the square pastries. Fill the core cavity of the apple with some of the cinnamon sugar mixture and dot with a tablespoon of butter. Bring opposite points of pastry up over the apple. Overlap, moisten with water and seal. Carefully lift the pastry-wrapped apple and place it in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with remaining apples, pastry squares, cinnamon sugar mixture and butter.
  • Pour hot syrup evenly over the tops and around the dumplings.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the crust on each dumpling is golden brown and apples are cooked all the way through. You can test the apples by poking them with a fork or skewer.
  • Serve warm with the hot syrup that's in the bottom of the baking dish and ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

Pioneers didn't have much, but what they did have they made the best of. This is a cross between dumplings and noodles, uses only 4 ingredients and is a great comfort food. We have never modified it from the original recipe which has been passed in our family I think forever.

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 egg
1 cup milk

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the flour and salt. Add the milk and egg, and mix until it forms a dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Roll out to your desired thickness for dumplings or you can roll thinner for noodles. Cut into strips, squares, or any shape you like. Let dry while you prepare broth or soup.
  • Drop dumplings into boiling broth, and cook until tender. Time will depend on the thickness of the dumplings and how dry they were.

1 1/4 cups aunt jemima pancake mix 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 beaten egg 1/2 cup milk 2 tablespoons melted shortening

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together Pancake Mix and salt; add beaten egg and milk, stirring lightly until batter is fairly smooth. Fold in melted shortening. Drop dumplings from a tablespoon into boiling stew. Cover tightly and cook for 15 minutes without lifting the cover. Serve immediately.

2-3 lb skinless boneless chicken breast
4 can(s) chicken broth(no msg)
2 Tbsp mccormick steak seasoning
1 bunch celery ,chopped
1 Tbsp onion powder
1 Tbsp garlic powder
2 c bisquick mix
1/2 c milk

Steps:

  • 1. Bring 10 cups of water,chicken,broth,celery & 1TB of seasoning to a boil,boil till chicken is cooked -about 30mins. Mix Bisquick and milk and let sit till chicken is done...remove and chop chicken leaving broth simmering, add chicken back to broth and then drop teaspoon fulls of mix into boiling water. Dumplings will float to the top and clutter in pot so you will have to move them around a bit to drop more.Sprinkle remaining seasoning on top of dumplings & cook until dumplings are no longer raw,about 10-15 mins.
  • 2. Tortilla Dumplings~ slice 1pkg of 12 flour tortillas into strips then again cut to squares, add to boiling broth all at once and stir just a bit to separate them out-cook about 5-10 mins *Don't stir too much or cook too long they will become soggy
  • 3. Canned Biscuits~ open can and cut or pull apart each biscuit into 4's *I would use about 4-6 cans for the recipe above because they dissolve into tiny dumplings as it cools down
