MOIST APPLESAUCE MEATLOAF



Moist Applesauce Meatloaf image

This savory meatloaf recipe is made with a secret ingredient: applesauce! The unsweetened applesauce adds moisture and subtle flavor.

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork (90/10)
1/2 cup minced onion
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
1 cup breadcrumbs (fine, plain, unseasoned)
3 tablespoons ketchup
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Optional: 4 tablespoons ketchup or barbecue sauce, for topping

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Lightly grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine the 2 kinds of ground meat with the chopped onion, egg, applesauce, breadcrumbs, 3 tablespoons of ketchup, salt, and pepper; mix thoroughly with your hands.
  • Pat the meatloaf mixture into the prepared loaf pan.
  • Bake the meatloaf in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours.
  • If using the optional topping, take the meatloaf out of the oven about 10 to 15 minutes before it's done. Carefully pour off excess grease and spread the 4 tablespoons of ketchup or barbecue sauce over the top. Return the loaf to the oven and continue baking until it's done.
  • The minimum safe temperature for ground beef and ground pork is 160 F (71.1 C). If in doubt, check the temperature by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the center of the loaf.
  • Let the meatloaf cool for 10 minutes and then remove it to a platter. Slice and serve.

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ (180℃). Lightly oil a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients, and mix well. Place the meatloaf mixture in the prepared pan. Bake for 1½ to 2 hours. Let cool 10 to 15 minutes. Turn the loaf out of the pan. Slice and serve.

1/4 cup celery, chopped fine

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup applesauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vinegar
1/2 teaspoon mustard

Steps:

  • Combine meat ingredients well.
  • Shape into a round loaf in 8x8x2 pan.
  • Made a crater or well in center of meat loaf.
  • Mix the sauce ingredients- pour into depression.
  • Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

1/4 cup brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon clove
1 tablespoon water

Steps:

  • Combine all main ingredients for meatloaf and pack firmly into a greased 9 x 5 x 3 loaf pan.
  • Press apple rings into top of loaf.
  • Brush with glaze made by mixing brown sugar, cloves& water.
  • Bake at 350 for 1 hour& 15 minutes.
  • Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

This Applesauce Meatloaf from my friend Kathy is absolutely delicious. Packed full of flavor with the Chili Sauce being the star of the show.

1 1/2 lbs Ground Beef
1 Cup Ritz Crackers (crushed)
1 Egg (beaten)
1 Cup Tomato Sauce (seasoned)
1/2 Cup Green Onions (finely chopped)
2 Tbsp Green Pepper (chopped)
1 1/2 Tsp Salt
3 Tbsp Unsweetened Applesauce
Chili Sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set aside.
  • In a bowl, combine all ingredients except the chili sauce and mix well.
  • Place the meatloaf mixture on the prepared baking sheet and shape it into the shape of a loaf.
  • Make a well in the middle of the loaf and fill with chili sauce. Alternatively, you can use a wooden spoon to make indentations then fill with chili sauce.
  • Bake for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.
  • Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

I was given this recipe by my matron of honor more than 25 years ago. It is a family favorite. It is quite different from the usual meatloaf, sweet enough that the kids love it, but the Dijon mustard cuts the sweetness so adults will enjoy it as well.

4 ounces cans applesauce

Steps:

  • Combine meatloaf ingredients and shape into a round loaf in a 8 or 9" baking pan.
  • Make a depression in the middle of the loaf.
  • Combine filling ingredients& pour into depression in loaf.
  • Bake at 350 for one hour.
  • If necessary, pour off grease before serving.
