This recipe has been in our family for years. We like turnips with turkey, so my mother used to serve this side dish with our turkey dinner at Christmas. Then I served this dish, and now my daughter, who has taken over preparing Christmas dinner, is carrying on the tradition.

3 medium turnips, peeled and cubed
4 tablespoons butter, divided
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon brown sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Dash ground nutmeg
1/2 cup dry bread crumbs

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Place turnips in a small saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10-12 minutes or until tender. Drain. , In a small bowl, combine turnips, 2 tablespoons butter and eggs. Combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper and nutmeg; add to turnip mixture and mix well. Transfer to a greased 8-in. square baking dish. , Melt remaining butter; toss with bread crumbs. Sprinkle over top. Bake, uncovered, 25-30 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve immediately.

1 large turnip, peeled and cubed
2 tablespoons butter
1 pinch salt and ground black pepper
2 large apples - peeled, cored, and diced
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 pinch ground cinnamon
¼ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter, softened

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch casserole dish.
  • Place turnip into a large pot and cover with salted water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and transfer to a bowl.
  • Mash turnip, 2 tablespoons butter, salt, and pepper together until smooth.
  • Toss apples with 2 tablespoons brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
  • Spread half the turnip mixture into the prepared casserole dish; top with half the apples. Repeat with remaining turnip mixture and apple mixture.
  • Mix flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons softened butter by hand in a bowl until mixture is an evenly coarse meal-texture; sprinkle over casserole.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cooked through and bubbling, about 1 hour.

This Turnip and Apple Casserole is a delicious mixture of apples, turnips, brown sugar and butter. It's also been lightened to make it Weight Watchers friendly. It makes a fabulous side dish for holiday dinners. I serve it at Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas!

3 medium white turnips (* You can substitute yellow turnips (rutabagas) but you'll need less (1-2), as they are usually bigger)
2 tbsp apple sauce
1 tsp butter extract
1/2 tbsp reduced sugar maple syrup
2 green apples
2 tbsp brown sugar
pinch of cinnamon
1/3 cup flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven 350 degrees F and spray a medium sized casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Peel, dice and place turnips in large pot, then cook. Drain.
  • Mash turnips with maple syrup, apple sauce and butter extract.
  • Peel. core and slice apples.
  • Toss with brown sugar and cinnamon.

4 medium turnips, peeled and cubed
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Place turnips in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 15 minutes or until tender and drain. Transfer turnips to a bowl and mash. Add the egg, sugar, butter and salt. , Transfer to a greased 1-qt. baking dish; sprinkle with cinnamon. Cover and bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a thermometer reads 160°.

1 large turnip (If your store only carries small, you will need several)
1 tablespoon butter
2 -4 medium granny smith apples, you can use almost any kind of apple except macintosh or delicious as they are too soft
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 pinch ground cinnamon
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Peel, dice and cook turnip.
  • Drain and mash with butter.
  • Peel and slice apples.
  • Toss with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • Arrange turnip and apple slices in greased casserole in alternate layers beginning and ending with turnips.
  • Combine crust ingredients to a crumbly texture and pat on top of casserole.
  • Bake at 350°F for one hour or until heated through.

The perfect way to get everyone at your holiday feast to enjoy turnip, including the little ones, is to prepare and serve this Turnip Apple Crumble.

1 turnip
4 cups apples peeled and sliced
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 tsp salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Fold paper towel and place in a microwaveable dish. Stand turnip on its end on top of paper towel.
  • Put in microwave and cook on high power for 10 minutes.
  • When done turn turnip onto it's other end and again cook for 10 minutes.
  • While turnip is cooking prepare the chunky apple sauce and crumble topping.
  • Place the sliced apples in a microwaveable bowl and add the granulated sugar, water and cinnamon. Set aside until turnip is cooked.
  • Prepare the crumble topping by mixing the flour, brown sugar, margarine and salt together in a small bowl.
  • Once turnip has been cooked on both ends remove from microwave and allow it to stand for 5 minutes.
  • Cover the apples with wax paper and put them in the microwave to cook on high for 7 to 9 minutes stirring once.
  • Cut one end off of the turnip and use two forks to peel the skin down off the turnip. Turn over and cut the other end off and finish peeling.
  • Place peeled turnip into a mixing bowl.
  • Remove the apple sauce from the microwave and mash with potato masher.
  • Add 1/2 cup of the apple sauce to the turnip and use the potato masher to combine until no large chunks remain.
  • Spray a small casserole dish with cooking spray. Layer a third of the turnip on the bottom. Top with half of the remaining apple sauce. About 1 cup. Repeat the layers ending with turnip.
  • Spread the crumble mixture over the last layer of turnip.
  • Bake uncovered in the oven for 1 hour.
  • Remove from oven and serve with your favourite holiday meal!

I first had this recipe at my husband's aunt's home back in 1979; got the recipe from her and have been making it to serve with turkey dinner ever since. I love the apples and turnip together! If you want to make it ahead of time, you can; just make it up to the layering stage then cover tightly and refrigerate. Put topping on, though, just before it goes into the oven.

1 large yellow turnip (known as a rutabaga, sometimes called a Swede)
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons light cream (you can use milk)
2 apples (I use macintosh)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 pinch ground cinnamon
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F; butter a casserole dish (or spray with Pam) and set aside.
  • Peel and dice turnip (this can be a tough job, as turnips are very dense) and place in a large pot.
  • Cover with cold, lightly salted water and bring to a boil.
  • Boil until turnip is tender (this takes longer than potatoes, usually), then drain and return to the pot.
  • Mash turnip with the 1 tbsp butter and cream; stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar and the cinnamon; set aside.
  • Peel apples, core, and slice.
  • In prepared casserole dish, layer 1/3 of the turnip, then half the sliced apples, then 1/3 of the turnip, then the remaining apples, then the remaining turnip; smooth top.
  • At this point, you could cover the dish tightly and refrigerate for several hours; don't put topping on until you're ready to pop this into the oven.
  • When ready to bake, combine topping ingredients in a small bowl until they are crumbly; sprinkle over top of turnip.
  • Bake in preheated oven for one hour; serve.
