This is a recipe that my mother used to make. On those chilly fall and winter days I would come home to such a welcoming feast. This is an old recipe and hope that you will enjoy it.

Number Of Ingredients 14

3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons white sugar
½ cup shortening
1 cup milk
4 apples - peeled, cored and halved
½ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¾ cup packed brown sugar
⅓ cup butter
1 pinch salt
2 cups boiling water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease one 13x9 inch baking pan. Combine 1/2 cup of the white sugar with the ground cinnamon and the ground nutmeg; set aside.
  • Measure sifted flour, add baking powder, salt, and 3 tablespoons sugar, and sift again. Cut shortening into sifted ingredients until mixture looks like coarse meal. Add milk, mixing until a soft dough is formed.
  • Knead dough on lightly floured board half a minute. Divide dough in half. Roll each half to a 1/8 inch thickness. Cut eight 5 inch squares out of the dough. Place an apple half on each square. Sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon of the sugar-spice mixture. Moisten edges of dough and bring corners up over apples, pressing edges together. Place covered apples in the prepared baking pan with joined edges either on top or underneath the apples.
  • Mix together brown sugar, butter, salt, and water; bring to a boil. Pour over dumplings in pan.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 45 to 50 minutes, or until apples are tender. Serve warm. Makes 8 servings. The brown sugar mixture forms a delicious butterscotch sauce around the dumplings.

1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Water
1/8 (one eighth) Teaspoon Cinnamon
1/8 (one eighth) Teaspoon Nutmeg
2 Tablespoons Butter or Margarine
2 Cups Enriched Flour
2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
1 Teaspoon Salt
2/3 (two thirds) Cups Shortening
1/2 (one half) Cup Milk
6 Macintosh Apples (about 3 inch diameter)

Steps:

  • There's four things you have to do to prepare this easy apple dumpling recipe: 1. Prepare the sauce 2. Prepare the actual apple dumplings 3. Pour the sauce over the dumplings 4. Bake We'll Start with the sauce: Place the sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small saucepan. Bring to boiling point. Add butter or margarine and stir until melted. Remove from heat and set aside. Now for the Dumplings: Preheat the oven to 375° Lightly grease a 9" x 13" x 1½" baking dish. Place flour, baking powder and salt in medium size bowl and mix it together with a fork. Add the shortening to the bowl and cut in shortening. Add milk to bowl all at once and use a fork to just moisten the mixture. Place the apple dumpling dough mixture on a lightly floured pastry board. Roll the pastry out until it is large enough cut six 6-inch squares (one for each apple). It's finally time to peel the apples! I peel them and cut them in half. I then cut out the core. I also think that cutting them in half helps insure the apple bakes thoroughly. Place the apple on one of the 6-inch dough squares holding the two halves together. Pour some sugar into the apple and then generously sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. I just about fill the center of the apple with the sugar. Place a pat of butter on the top. Take a little water and moisten the edges of the 6-inch dough square. Fold the corners to the center of the top of the apple. Do you see now why you want smaller apples? If you start to run a little low on dough doing the final apples you can always roll it out a bit more. Pinch the dough together at the seams. Try to place the apple dumplings in the baking dish about an inch apart if possible. Pour the sauce we made earlier over the apple dumplings and then sprinkle them with sugar. Place the baking dish in the oven preheated to 375° and bake for 35 minutes.

1 recipe pastry for double-crust pie
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
½ cup butter
¾ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 inch pan.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll pastry into a large rectangle, about 24 by 16 inches. Cut into 6 square pieces. Place an apple on each pastry square with the cored opening facing upward. Cut butter into 8 pieces. Place 1 piece of butter in the opening of each apple; reserve remaining butter for sauce. Divide brown sugar between apples, poking some inside each cored opening and the rest around the base of each apple. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples.
  • With slightly wet fingertips, bring one corner of pastry square up to the top of the apple, then bring the opposite corner to the top and press together. Bring up the two remaining corners, and seal. Slightly pinch the dough at the sides to completely seal in the apple. Repeat with the remaining apples. Place in prepared baking dish.
  • In a saucepan, combine water, white sugar, vanilla extract and reserved butter. Place over medium heat, and bring to a boil in a large saucepan. Boil for 5 minutes, or until sugar is dissolved. Carefully pour over dumplings.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes. Place each apple dumpling in a dessert bowl, and spoon some sauce over the top.

Steps:

  • Make your pie crust as you normally do and divide evenly for the amount of apples you have (6 for 6 apples, 8 for 8 apples etc.).
  • mix the dry ingredients.
  • Roll out pastry (the size of a small egg) into a circle big enough to"cover" the whole apple.
  • Place an apple in center of each circle of dough and fill hole where core was with a pat of butter, some of the dry mix and top with another pat of butter.
  • "fold"dough up and encase apple with dough sealing at the top.
  • They will look like a"purse" sort of.
  • Bake 350F degrees until dough is golden brown and apple is tender.

1-1/2 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 tablespoons butter
3 to 6 drops red food coloring, optional
DUMPLINGS:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
1/3 cup 2% milk
6 small tart apples, peeled and cored
4 teaspoons sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
6 teaspoons butter, softened
3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

Steps:

  • For syrup, in a small saucepan, bring the water, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to a boil, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat; add butter and food coloring if desired. Stir until butter is melted; set aside. , For dumplings, in a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening until crumbly. Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings like my Grandmother Made image

Number Of Ingredients 5

2-10 count cans of biscuits
3 granny smith apples
¾ stick butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Boiling water (Enough to completely cover the dumplings and then another ½ cup)
  • Let biscuits sit out while you peel and chop apples (They're easier to roll out that way).
  • Peel and chop apples into small pieces. Place in bowl and sprinkle with cinnamon, stirring to coat.
  • Roll out biscuit and put a heaping tablespoon of apples in the center. Pull biscuit around apples and pinch to seal.
  • Place dumpling pinched side down in 13 X 9 casserole dish. Continue making until all 20 dumplings are made and placed in dish.
  • Cut butter into pats and place on top of dumplings. Pour any remaining apple pieces on top of the dumplings.
  • Sprinkle 1 cup of sugar over the dumplings.
  • Then pour boiling water gently over the dumplings. Pour water until it completely covers the dumplings. Then add about another ½ cup. Trust me, the water will turn into a delicious syrup.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

use any pastry/pie crust that you like
6 medium baking apples (mcintosh work well)
2 c water
1/3 stick butter
1 c sugar
1 Tbsp cinnamon

Steps:

  • 1. Peel and core apples. Try to leave them whole but may be cut in half if necessary.Divide pie crust into 6 peices. Roll each peice of crust into a large round. Place apple in the center of each crust. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and a pat of butter. Fold crust up around apple and filling and seal the top. Place in a large greased baking dish.
  • 2. In a small sauce pan, bring 2 cups water, 1/3 stick butter, 1 cup sugar and 1 T. cinnamon to a boil. Stir often. Pour mixture over dumplings. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes then reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake additional 30 minutes. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

3/4 c. butter
1 c. brown sugar (packed)
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 c. 7 Up (or lemon-lime soda)
2 lg. granny smith apples (peeled & cored)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven at 350. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray; set aside.
  • Peel and core apples, then cut each apple into 8 slices. Starting at the wide end, roll each apple slice in a crescent roll and place in the prepared baking dish. (I place 6 on each side and 4 down the middle.)
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Once thickened, remove from heat and pour evenly over the dumplings.
  • Pour the soda down the middle and along the edges of the baking dish (not over the rolls).
  • Bake the dumplings for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream.
