- Measure flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, and salt into a large bowl. Cut in butter or margarine until crumbly. Add shredded apple and milk. Stir to form a soft dough.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently 8 to 10 times. Pat into two 6-inch circles. Place on greased baking sheet. Brush tops with milk, and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Score each into 6 pie-shaped wedges.
- Bake at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 15 minutes, or until browned and risen. Serve warm with butter.

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a standard 12-cup muffin tin with baking cups. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, oats, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, butter, and milk. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients, then stir in apple.
- Divide batter evenly between muffin cups, adding a scant 1/4 cup to each. Sprinkle with crumb topping if desired. Bake until tops spring back when lightly touched, about 20 minutes. Cool in pans 5 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 375°; lightly butter a 10-inch diameter circle in the center of a baking sheet.
- In a bowl, stir the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt together.
- Cut the butter into ½ inch cubes and distribute them over the flour mixture.
- With a pastry blender, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a small bowl, stir the egg, milk, molasses, and vanilla together.
- Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and stir to combine; the dough will be sticky.
- Stir in the apple and dates until evenly distributed.
- Spread the dough into an 8-inch diameter circle in the center of the prepared baking sheet.
- With a serrated knife, cut into 8 wedges; bake 22-27 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean.
- Remove the baking sheet to a wire rack and cool for 10 minutes.
- Using a spatula, transfer the scones to the wire rack to cool.
- Recut into wedges, if necessary; serve warm.
