Time P9DT40m

Yield 120

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
¼ cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
3 cups white sugar, divided
3 cups milk

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Let stand 10 minutes. In a 2 quart container glass, plastic or ceramic container, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or flour will lump when milk is added. Slowly stir in 1 cup milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Cover loosely and let stand until bubbly. Consider this day 1 of the 10 day cycle. Leave loosely covered at room temperature.
  • On days 2 through 4; stir starter with a spoon. Day 5; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Days 6 through 9; stir only.
  • Day 10; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Remove 1 cup to make your first bread, give 2 cups to friends along with this recipe, and your favorite Amish Bread recipe. Store the remaining 1 cup starter in a container in the refrigerator, or begin the 10 day process over again (beginning with step 2).

Category Recipe Roundup
  • Amish Friendship Bread. You can make this gorgeous, fragrant Amish friendship bread with only seven simple ingredients: sugar, butter, eggs, buttermilk, flour, baking soda, and cinnamon.
  • Amish Apple Fritter Bread. Apple fritter bread is hands down one of the most phenomenal homemade bread varieties you’ll ever try. It has a crunchy, crispy outer crust with a sweet, sticky glaze that’s out of this world.
  • Amish Pumpkin Bread. Here’s another tasty bread that takes only 15 minutes of prep work and about an hour to bake. If you’re looking for a simple beginner’s bread that’s ideal for fall, this one is it.
  • Amish Onion Bread. If you’re looking for a homemade Amish bread that’s more savory than sweet, give this Amish onion bread recipe a try. The bread itself is light and fluffy on the inside, but the outside is covered in robust flavors and delightfully crunchy ingredients.
  • Amish Cornbread. This dense, crumbly cornbread is the ultimate in simple homemade bread. If you’ve ever had authentic southern cornbread (the kind with sour cream, extra butter, and just a hint of sugar), then you already know how this tastes, feels, and looks.
  • Amish Biscuits. If you’re a “biscuits for breakfast” kind of person, you’ll undoubtedly want to bookmark this super simple, six-ingredient biscuit recipe.
  • Amish Potato Rolls. If you think thick, fluffy yeast rolls are the perfect dinner roll, just wait until you try these Amish potato rolls. They’ll take a bit of time to make, it’s true, but they are entirely worth the wait.
  • Amish Potato Bread. Amish potato bread is almost as good as Amish potato rolls. In fact, some people might even argue that it’s better. You can use it for practically anything – sandwich bread, toast, PB&J sandwiches, and more.
  • Honey Whole Wheat Bread. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of those quick Amish breads that you can whip up in less than an hour. With prep time, rise time, and bake time, it takes a little over 3 hours from start to finish.
  • Amish White Bread. The actual name of this bread is “no-fail Amish white bread,” and that should give you all the confidence you need, even as a beginner baker, to know you can pull it together.

  • Delicious Amish-style Cinnamon Rolls. Spice up your current cinnamon roll recipe by making it Amish-style. This recipe is efficient, too — it uses double the dough.

  • Sweet Amish Macaroni Salad. Make this macaroni salad, and you’ll have everybody asking for the recipe. It’s so creamy and flavorful, perfect as a side with your favorite Amish main dish.

  • Amish Country Casserole. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly and straightforward recipe, you’ve hit the jackpot here. Plus, it’s delicious and a winner with every crowd.
  • Glazed Amish Donuts. Are you drooling yet? Wait until you try some traditional Amish donuts. The recipe and glaze are simple, but the flavor will blow you away.
  • Amish Caramel. Homemade candy-making is an experience like nothing else — better than anything you could buy in the store. These Amish caramels use only five ingredients you probably already have: sugar, corn syrup, unsalted butter, heavy cream, and vanilla.
  • Amish Hamburger Noodle Casserole. Casserole recipes (and most other Amish food recipes) work for any time of year, especially this one. It’s also perfect for meal-prepping.
