OVERNIGHT COLESLAW
This has been a very popular salad from my recipe box for a long, long time! Before I retired, when my office had a covered-dish-get-together, I was always asked to bring my tangy coleslaw. My family loves it, too. -Fern Hammock, Garland, Texas

Steps:
- In a large bowl, combine first four ingredients. Sprinkle with sugar; set aside. In a large saucepan, combine dressing ingredients; bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and pour over vegetables; toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Stir well before serving. Serve with a slotted spoon.

TWENTY-FOUR HOUR SALAD
A layered green salad with green peas, celery, bell peppers, Cheddar cheese and bacon sprinkled over all. For other variations, I have substituted or added some of my own favorite ingredients, such as: carrots, eggs, mushrooms, sprouts and seeded cucumbers.

- In a large transparent bowl, layer lettuce, celery, bell peppers, onions, peas, mayonnaise, sugar and cheese. Sprinkle bacon bits evenly over the top of the salad.
- Cover bowl, and refrigerate for 24 hours before serving.

On one of my many cookbook /recipe searches , I found a cookbook called Americana Cookery. I liked the name , but I loved some of the recipes in it even more. Thought I might place some of them here for safe keeping and to share

Steps:
- Shred cabbage, dice onion, chop green pepper, slice olives,
- Combine cabbage, onion, green pepper, and olives in a large bowl.
- Sprinkle with sugar, toss well to mix.
- Combine salad oil, vinegar, salt, celery seed, and mustard in a saucepan.
- Bring to a boil, boil for 3 min, stirring constantly.
- Pour over vegetable mixture, toss to mix well.
- Cover bowl tightly.
- Refrigerate for 24 hours.

Steps:
- Stir sugar into cabbage (use very large bowl or pan for mixing). Place half the cabbage in bowl. Cover with onion slices, green onion and green pepper. Top with remaining cabbage.
- Combine all dressing ingredients. Bring to a rolling boil. Pour hot dressing over slaw slowly. Do not stir.
- Cover, refrigerate at once. Chill 14 hours. Stir well before serving.

- 1. Boil topping 3 minutes and pour over slaw mix. refrigerate overnight.

- 1. Stir sugar into cabage. place half the cabbage in a large bowl. Layer ALL the onions. Cover with remaining cabbage. 3. Combine celery seeds, sugar, dry mustard, salt and vinegar in saucepan. Bring to a rolling boil. Add oil, stirring, return to rolling boil. 4. Remove from heat and immediately pour dressing over prepared cabbage. DO NOT STIR. Cover and refrigerate at once. Chill for 24 hours. Strir well before serving.

- 1. Combine oil, vinegar and 2 tablespoons sugar in saucepan; bring to a boil
- 2. Shred cabbage; add 3/4 cup sugar, salt, diced onion, diced pepper and celery seed.
- 3. Pour heated dressing over slaw mixture and refrigerate (overnight, if possible).
