  • Dr. Ghosh: Nausea and vomiting are often associated with cancer-from chemotherapy, after surgery, from medications and radiation therapy. Sometimes even strong smells can cause nausea or vomiting. Medications that fight nausea work well for most people but may cause symptoms of dry mouth, sleepiness and light-headedness.Here are some helpful hints to relieve nausea:Use a kitchen fan or open the windows when cooking.Keep pans covered to reduce cooking odors. Eat small, frequent meals slowly.Serve food cold because cold foods have less of an aroma.Avoid spicy, greasy or rich foods.Choose dry, salty foods such as dry toast, crackers and pretzels.Choose sugar-sweetened beverages over sugar-free drinks, because sugar slows digestion and doesn't tend to cause nausea.Drink chilled beverages because they go down easier.Consume foods separate from beverages by at least an hour, if you are not troubled by dry mouth.Sit up or stay up for at least 90 minutes after eating.Specific foods that may help include clear liquids, carbonated drinks, yogurt, sherbet, angel food cake, hot wheat cereal, rice, oatmeal, boiled potatoes, noodles, canned peaches or other soft fruits and vegetables. From "Betty Crocker's Living with Cancer Cookbook." • You are anxious. It’s not fully understood why, but if you’re nervous or stressed (they usually go hand-in-hand), you may experience abdominal pain and nausea.
  • You're pregnant. You’re familiar with morning sickness, but nausea is often one of the first signs of pregnancy and it can happen day or night. In fact, 75 percent of women are said to suffer from nausea and vomiting while pregnant, says Dr. Behar.
  • You have a migraine. If you suffer from migraines on a regular basis, you know nausea is one of the symptoms that usually accompanies the throbbing head pain.
  • You have food poisoning. If you have an upset stomach along with cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and a fever, you may have food poisoning, says Dr. Ruiz.
  • You have gastroparesis. Also known as delayed gastric emptying, gastroparesis is the slowing down or partial paralysis of your stomach muscles that prevents proper digestion, says Dr. Vanderheyden.
  • You have an ear infection. This may surprise you, but ear infections could be the culprit. “The semicircular canals in the ear are one of the main components of balance in our body, and if you have inflammation in the canals, you may experience nausea and vomiting,” Dr. Behar explains.
  • You get motion sickness. Motion sickness is caused by any movement, but it’s usually associated with riding in a car, boat, or plane, says Dr. Behar.
  • You're having a heart attack. Women are more likely to experience other symptoms along with chest pain when having a heart attack, according to Mayo Clinic.

  • Hangover Nausea. A common cause of feeling nauseated all day is consuming too much alcohol the previous night. Rest and plenty of water are the usual treatments as a hangover must run its course, so to speak.
  • Food Allergy. Similar to the feeling of having food poisoning, people experiencing an overactive immune response to a particular food will feel nauseated and may experience vomiting.
  • Morning Sickness (Nausea during Pregnancy) Morning sickness is a normal side effect of pregnancy that leads to nausea. It typically doesn’t signify a serious condition, but is highly unpleasant, nonetheless.

  • Migraine Nausea. Nausea with a severe headache and sensitivity to light usually points to a migraine. Sometimes vomiting can follow. The queasiness is caused by the autonomic nervous system’s response to the pain.

  • Gastroparesis. Chronic nausea is one of the symptoms of various abdominal disorders such as peptic ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome.
